Pacquiao getting good practice for Margarito bout by doing a lot of running

By Dave Lahr: It’s been reported that Manny Pacquiao outran Amir Khan in a training session in the Philippines. This is should be good practice for Pacquiao when he’s forced to flee for his life against Antonio Margarito on November 13th at the Cowboys Stadium.

Supposedly, Pacquiao left Khan in the dust while running up hills in his native Philippines. What do you expect? Khan just got to the tropical country and he’s dying from the humidly in the air. How can you expect him to run faster than Pacquiao in his own country?

Pacquiao is like a mountain goat running up those hills, and he’s totally acclimated to the country cause where he’s lived his whole life. I don’t see how this has any meanings for the Margarito bout other than Pacquiao will have the option to run when Margarito starts busting up his eyes, nose, lips and teeth.

At that point, I think Pacquiao’s running ability might do him good. It would be like a replay of Margarito vs. Miguel Cotto with Margarito literally chasing Pacquiao around the ring and punishing him with uppercuts and powerful body shots every time Pacquiao stops to try and throw a punch.

Pacquiao doesn’t fight well under pressure and never has been able to throw punches when his opponent was throwing a lot of shots. Pacquiao isn’t going to know what to do with Margarito throwing on average 100 punches per round. Pacquiao will keep waiting for Margarito to stop punching, but he won’t.

He’ll keep pouring the shots in like arrows, tagging Pacquiao in the face, nose and midsection and causing him to bleed everywhere. This is going to be one of those rare pay per view fights where the fight is worth every pen of the cost. It could be bad for those boxing fans at home who are kind of squeamish at the site of a great of blood.

In that case, the HBO broadcasters need to warn fans at home that the fight could be bloody and give the alternative to turning the channel if it gets too much for them. If you remember what Margarito did to Cotto in 2008, it was a sickening sight to see Cotto’s torn apart face by the 11th round.

I see the same thing happening with Pacquiao, but possibly worse. Margarito is fighting for respect and he’s going to be throwing his shots even harder than he usually does and his work rate with be at an all-time high. Pacquiao, now soft from his victories over Cotto, Oscar De La Hoya, Joshua Clottey and Ricky Hatton, won’t be able to handle the pace that Margarito sets nor the power of his shots.
