Image: Mosley turned 39 today - Is he going to get beaten by Mora on 9/18?By Dan Ambrose: Former three division champion Shane Mosley (46-6, 39 KO’s) turned a ripe 39-years-old on Tuesday. That wouldn’t be such a big deal if Mosley hadn’t lost his last fight so badly to Floyd Mayweather Jr., losing almost every round of the fight in May. Mosley looked old and tired in that fight the way a person is supposed to look at his age. And now Mosley is taking on the light hitting Sergio Mora (22-1-1, 6 KO’s) on September 18th in a fight that has a loaded undercard at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California.

It will likely be a sell out and millions of fans will be tuning in to watch it on HBO. If Mosley looks as bad as he did last time out, it sure won’t be missed by all the fans that are going to be watching this fight. If you look at Mora’s loss to Vernon Forrest in their rematch in September 2008, you can get a pretty good idea why Mosley chose Mora to fight. Mora dominated an out of shape Forrest in their first fight in June 2008. However, in the rematch, a motivated Forrest came in shape and took control of the fight early on with power shots and was able to keep control of the fight with power alone.

Mora looked uncomfortable at getting hit by Forrest’s heavy shots in that fight, and this was probably not lost on Mosley. If he can get Mora’s attention early on in the fight with some hard shots, he could get Mora in the survival mode and then dominate him over the rest of the fight. But for that to happen, Mosley will have to have enough stamina to fight hard for the entire fight, not just up to the 2nd round like in his last bout against Mayweather.

Mosley came into the Mayweather fight in tip top shape, and yet he ran out of gas after only two rounds. This was Mosley’s first fight in over a year, as he wasted the year thinking he was going to get a big money fight against one of the top fighters like Manny Pacquiao. Luckily for Mosley, he was able to get the fight with Mayweather, but the time off really seemed to hurt Mosley with his condition. We’ll see if Mosley is able to get back to the kind of shape that he used to be in when he was fighting well.

He’s going to have to be going after Mora all fight long, because Mora moves a lot and likes to peck and run. Maybe the judges will give it to Mosley anyway, even if he gets dominated in this fight. I see him getting beaten pretty decisively, but that doesn’t mean that Mora will be able to win the decision. He’s facing a much popular fighter than him and for those kinds of guys, you have to do something extra special if you want to ensure that you can get the decision.
