Image: Mosley-Mora: Will Shane find the fountain of youth on 9/18?By Jim Dower: Shane Mosley (46-6, 39 KO’s) is in a make it or break type of fight on September 18th against Sergio Mora (22-1-1, 6 KO’s) in their fight at the Staples Center, in Los Angeles, California. Mosley, who will be turning 39 on Tuesday, was easily beat by Floyd Mayweather Jr. in his last fight on May 1st.

It was one of those kinds of losses where Mosley couldn’t do anything right and looked like an over-the-hill fighter. Rather than hang up his gloves or take on a soft opponent, Mosley decided to take on the wily Mora and try to get his career back in order at junior middleweight.

It’s going to be tough, because Mosley looked about as bad as a fighter can look without being knocked out. Even the much smaller Juan Manuel Marquez looked better than Mosley in his fight against Mayweather.

Mosley really needs to not only beat the light hitting Mora on September 18th, but he’s got to look good if he wants to lure some of the most popular fighters like Manny Pacquiao into fighting him. However, Mosley can’t look too good because then he’ll be avoided because he would then be considered too dangerous.

There are some fans who feel that Mosley’s poor performance against Mayweather wasn’t because of his age, but rather due to Mayweather being so much better than Shane. But that doesn’t explain why Mosley looked so tired early on in the fight. Mosley looked all of 38 in that fight and you have keep that in mind as he goes into his tough bout with Mora.

There are a couple excellent fights on the undercard with unbeaten welterweight contender Saul Alvarez (33-0-1, 25 KO’s) facing Carlos Baldomir (45-12-6, 14 KO’s), and light welterweight contender Victor Ortiz (27-2-1, 21 KO’s) vs. Vivian Harris (29-4-1, 19 KO’s).

Alvarez is thought to have the kind of talent that will make him a future champion at welterweight and junior middleweight. Baldomir has a lot of experience, maybe too much for the young 20-year-old Alvarez. Baldomir has wins over Arturo Gatti and Zab Judah.

He’s also been in with Floyd Mayweather Jr. Ortiz, a southpaw, is one of the hardest punchers in the junior middleweight division and a possible champion in the future. His power makes him a real threat against anyone in the division.
