Image: Kell Brook vs. Michael Jennings predictionBy William Mackay: The match-up between unbeaten British welterweight champion Kell Brook (21-0, 14 KO’s) and Michael Jennings (36-2, 17 KO’s) is one of the least interesting fights on the Magnificent Seven fight card for this Saturday night at the LG Arena, Birmingham. Brook, 24, has way too much talent for the 33-year-old Jennings in this fight, and I can’t see this fight going for more than five or six rounds at best, and that’s if Brook takes it easy on Jennings and holds him up for that long to get rounds in. Jennings is a good local fighter, but he’s no way in the same class as Brook and it’s really a disappointment that he’s the opponent for Brook in this fight.

The bout is eliminator fight for the World Boxing Organization welterweight title. The winner of the fight will become WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao’s mandatory. Of course, Pacquiao will never fight either Brook or Jennings. He’s obviously going to be vacating his WBO title in the near future. However, Brook, if he beats Jennings on Saturday night, can fight someone like unbeaten Mike Jones for the vacant WBO title once Pacquiao vacates.

A fight between Brook and Jones would be a classic because of the huge power of Jones and the wild Naseem Hamed style that Brooks uses. But first things first, Brook has to defeat Jennings on Saturday night before he can look for bigger things in the near future. Jennings doesn’t have any power to speak of, and will probably be moving around in circles shooting out his pesky jab and throwing a few weak combinations. Jennings is smart enough to know that if he tries to mix it up with Brook for any length of time, he’s going to end up getting knocked out like he was against Miguel Cotto last year in February 2009.

In that fight, Jennings tried to stay away from Cotto to survive. However, Cotto stalked him and caught up to Jennings in the 4th and 5th rounds, hurting him with big shots. In the 5th, Cotto finally took Jennings out. The fight was ridiculously easy for Cotto, and you have to wonder why the WBO ranked Jennings so high when he’d only fought domestic fighters previous to that.

Brook is probably going to have to chase Jennings down before he can knock him out, but I don’t think it’s going to take too long for Brook to catch up to him. Jennings is easy time and cut off in the ring. I see Brook trapping him in the 4th or 5th rounds and knocking him out with some hard hooks to the head. It’s too bad a better opponent couldn’t have been found for Brook in this fight. Jennings isn’t someone that will give Brook any competition in this fight.

Prediction: Brook by 5th round TKO.
