Kell Brook targeting Eubank Jr vs. Smith winner for summer clash
By Charles Brun: Nineteen-year professional Kell Brook will be attending this Saturday’s British clash between Chris Eubank Jr & Liam Smith at the Manchester Arena, hoping to fight the winner in the summer.
The 36-year-old former IBF welterweight champion Brook (40-3, 28 KOs) hasn’t fought since last February when he beat Amir Khan by a sixth round knockout in a fight that many boxing fans likened to an old-timer’s match because both guys looked totally shot.
Unfortunately for Brook, Eubank Jr (32-2, 23 KOs) has already made it known that the next opponent he wants after he defeats ‘Beefy’ Smith on Saturday night is as follows:
- Conor Benn
- Gennadiy Golovkin
- Jermall Charlo
“Kell [Brook] will be there on Saturday. He’s desperate for the winner of that fight. He wanted the Eubank fight after the [Amir] Khan fight,” said BOXXER promoter Ben Shalom to Sky Sports.
“He feels he wants the winner of this fight, whether that’s Liam Smith or whether that’s Eubank Jr. There is a rematch clause, so if Liam does win, Eubank will have the option with that one, but there’ll be massive fights for whoever the winner is.”
Sadly, Brook will be wasting his time by attending the Eubank Jr-Smith fight, hoping to fight the winner because it’s not happening. You hate to say it, but someone needs to inform Brook that he will NOT get an opportunity to fight the winner of that contest.
If Smith is victorious on Saturday, he’ll have to face Eubank Jr again because Chris has a rematch clause in the contract, which will force Liam’s hand.
Brook can potentially fight Smith after he loses the fight to Eubank Jr. That would be possible, as long as Brook doesn’t mind fighting Smith coming off a loss. I don’t know that the boxing public in the UK would be too keen on seeing Brook fight a recently beaten Smith, but it’s better than nothing.
Eubank Jr would be doing Brook a massive favor by fighting him in the summer, but he wouldn’t get much out of it in return. It would just be a case of Eubank Jr doing Brook a solid for the sake of throwing a bone to a needy fighter who has poor options.
Brook should focus on scouring the bottom ranks of the 147 & 154-lb divisions if he wants a chance to fight somebody.
