Does Tomasz Adamek have the combined Power, Speed and Skills to be Heavyweight Champion?

By Mark Hepplestall: Tomasz Adamek is a former two weight world champion in the light heavyweight and cruiserweight division. Tomasz Adamek has a 43 fight record including 42 wins and 27 by TKO/KO with only a single defeat on points to “Bad” Chad Dawson. More recently Tomasz Adamek has moved up to heavyweight in search of his third world title however he has found himself in a division were he is head and heels better then the majority of the top 15 even though he hasn’t fought any of them apart from the very overrated Chris Arreola yet if Adamek decided to fight one of the Klitschko Brothers would he really have a chance?

First of all Adamek is not ready for a world title shot, so any truth in a possible fight with Vitali Klitschko after Adamek fights Vinny Maddalone would be suicide. Adamek needs to test his abilities against the likes of Tony Thompson, Ray Austin or Juan Carlos Gomez before thinking of fighting for a world title.

Since moving to heavyweight Adamek has fought against Andrew Golota, Jason Estrada,Chris Arreola and Michael Grant. All of these fights apart from the Golota fight were settled on point’s decisions. Adamek is more science orientated then sensation in this division and this is great because he is in a sport called “the sweet science”. Since moving to heavyweight Adamek’s attribute sets are not in equilibrium and this could lead to problems in the future against the better boxers in the division. For one Adamek’s boxing skills are not in question, he is a great boxer and shown in all his fights thus far that he is a multi-dimensional fighter and can out work one dimensional power punchers via movement and combinations. In the Arreola fight Adamek’s ability to move into range, land combinations and move out of range without receiving maximum damage allowed him to build up a large lead the scorecards apart from one judge in Tony Crebs who is American and watching an American boxer fighting on American soil. There is no doubt that his agility and stamina were on show in this fight, he showed that the bigger heavyweights would not be able to keep up with him and one thing that boxers are afraid of is people who can box and move constantly making them look stupid for all 12 rounds.

One attribute that is in question is Adamek’s speed, unfortunately Adamek has not been known for his Blistering speed at any weight limit and since moving up from light heavyweight to cruiserweight and eventually to heavyweight it is evident that the weight Adamek has added has reduced his speed. The only positive is the lack of athletic heavyweights in the division means that even though Adamek has slowed down he is automatically faster than the vast majority of the current heavyweights.

Also since moving up to heavyweight Tomasz Adamek’s only knock out was against Andrew Golota, in this fight Adamek’s accuracy and speed was spectacular compared to his opponents. At one point before the stoppage Adamek landed 8 – 10 clean shots on the chin of Golota before he went down and the referee stopped the fight. In Adamek’s other three heavyweight fights he hasn’t had the one punch power that is needed in the heavyweight division and instead focused on showcasing his boxing skills to build up leads on the scorecards. Against Arreola Adamek landed large amounts of combinations flush on the less accurate and tired Arreola but didn’t hurt him once and in the Grant fight all power punching was with Grant and if it wasn’t for Adamek’s Titanium chin he could have found himself on the floor many times. Right now his lack of power is not a big issue but against the better fighters in the division one punch could change the momentum direction in a fight and this could be needed against Wladimir, who does not react well to huge punchers landing leading to momentum changes like in the Corrie Sanders fight.

Adamek’s best attribute is his chin, he is happy to box and move or stand toe to toe with big punchers and his chin supports him in either situation. This would be Adamek’s greatest asset if he was to fight Wladimir or Vitali Klitschko.

Overall Adamek has great stamina, accuracy and agility yet has slightly lost speed and has not brought up power with his added weight. His best asset is his granite chin which could save him many times against a big puncher. The best option for Adamek would be to fight a top contender and drive for a fight with David Haye, this would be a great fight and it’s just unfortunate that one turned heavyweight one turned cruiserweight.
