Toney wants to fight Couture in boxing match

By Matt Stein: Now that James Toney has tried and miserably failed in his attempt to win a MMA match against 47-year-old Randy Couture in UFC 118, Toney would like for Couture to give him a chance to return the favor by taking him on in the boxing ring rather than another MMA match.

In an interview at Fightfan.com, the 42-year-old Toney said this: “We’ll pay Randy Couture more money than he made Saturday night to face me in the boxing ring.”

In theory, this sounds like an appealing fight because there would be some fans that would be willing to pay to see it. However, there probably isn’t enough boxing fans familiar with Couture to make it happen.

Also, Toney has been struggling in the past five years in the boxing ring and he’s not a big attraction in the sport right now. There probably wouldn’t be a lot of interest in seeing the 42-year-old Toney boxing a guy as old as the 47-year-old Couture, who has zero boxing experience. Toney may want to avenge his defeat to Couture but the sad fact is he’s just going to have to forget about it.

He lost badly in his 1st round tap out loss to Couture but there’s no interest in a boxing match between him and Couture, even if Couture was interested in doing this. He’s not interested and said so in recent interviews.

Strangely enough, Toney says he’s not done with MMA. He says “I’m not a quitter,” and says he’ll be back next year for more MMA action. At 42, it will take a monumental effort for Toney to have to learn enough in the sport where he doesn’t get embarrassed again by someone else.

As bad as Toney looked last Saturday night, almost anybody in the sport would have had a great chance of beating Toney. It probably wouldn’t have taken a really good fighter like Couture to do the job, because Toney just looked lost out there, as if he hadn’t trained at all for the match.
