Seen as a controversial figure, he talked the talk, and sometimes walked the walk. There were times when even in defeat he was brilliant. But to many times he was disappointing even in victory.

Toney was a 3 weight world champion. He was seen smoking cigars and lived the life of a celebrity. Well known for his dislike of training, he split opinions. Some say he was great and had a better defence than Floyd Mayweather Jr, a defence that inspired Mayweather. Others claim he was a wasted talent and a embarrassment to athletes.

Climbing 5 weight divisions, Toney actively chased boxing’s elite. He faced off against some special talent including Michael Nunn, Roy Jones Jr, Evander Holyfield, and Hasim Rahman. Freddie Roach described James Toney as the most talented boxer he has ever trained, and Roach has arguably trained the best. His record stands at 74 wins, 7 loses, 3 draws, 2 no contests, and 45 knockouts. A very impressive record.

The reason for the inconsistent performances was unquestionably down to mindset, rather than lack of ability. Toney was so confident that he didn’t feel the need to train 100% for anyone. He would simply do his thing and it would be too much for anyone to handle, regardless of his fitness levels. it wasn’t always the case. But even during fights in which he had trained very little, he was often incredible. His physique didn’t suggest a slick and skilful fighter, but that’s exactly what he was. James Toney is one of the best fighters I have ever seen. To be a all time great you must be consistent. Incredible? Yes. Consistent? No. He certainly had the ability to be up there with the best ever. But lack of motivation for training changed the way he will be remembered. His record stands at 74 wins, 7 loses, 3 draws, 2 no contests, and 45 knockouts. A very impressive record for someone who hates training.
