Pascal faces his toughest test with Dawson

By Jason Kim: On Saturday night, WBC light heavyweight champion Jean Pascal will be making his third and perhaps his last title defense of his World Boxing Council title against two time light heavyweight champion Chad Dawson at the Bell Centre, in Montreal, Canada. It might be Pascal’s last title defense because Dawson is likely to beat Pascal and beat him bad. Pascal has never faced anymore remotely as talented as Dawson before during his career and there’s really no one for him to gauge a guy like Dawson.

Pascal has the home town advantage, but that’s the extent of it right there. Pascal will be facing the Mayweather of the light heavyweight division with Dawson. There’s really no one like Dawson out of the bunch. When he’s motivated, he makes it look effortless, but when he’s bored with his opponent, he can disappear for rounds on end while letting his opponent work.

Dawson won’t likely have problems getting motivated for this Saturday’s fight because Pascal seems to have hit a nerve recently during a press conference when he spoke about Dawson’s movement. It seems that Pascal wants Dawson to stand and trade with him. He may get his wish because Dawson looked like he wanted to tear Pascal’s head off during their press conference on Wednesday.

It’s hard to tell who has the faster hands between Pascal and Dawson, because both are lightning fast. However, Dawson punches harder and is a much smoother boxer than Pascal. He doesn’t like to just stand and go toe-to-toe with his opponents, but he’s willing to do so if need be.

Most likely Dawson will choose to move and will pick his spots to throw two and three punch combinations. It will be up to Pascal to see if he can match Dawson shot for shot. It may not be easy because Dawson’s reach advantage and movement will be a problem for Pascal as long as this fight lasts.
