Jean Pascal: The world is his oyster

Image: Jean Pascal: The world is his oysterBy Peter Wells: After winning the most important fight of his career so far Canadian Jean Pascal is in a great position. He’s only just beaten Chad Dawson, a pound-for-pound top ten fighter and was undefeated. The way the fight ended can add the question of whether Chad could have stopped Pascal, but the cut stopped that happening. Dawson should have pushed harder earlier, it was all too little too late. Jean was quick on his feet, and was in and out in a flash. Dawson had never seen speed like it before and for a Light Heavyweight it was pretty good to watch.

Jean has improved dramatically since losing at Super Middleweight to Carl Froch. He’s now gained the IBO and World Boxing Council Light Heavyweight titles and eyes more in the future. He showed how determined he was in his rematch with Adrian Diaconu, by fighting with a dislocated shoulder. Now at 26-1(16KO’s) and still only 27 he has a great future ahead of him, but one slip up could ruin that.

Already he’s got fighters calling out his name, including current IBF Light Heavyweight champion, Tavoris Cloud. The unbeaten warrior survived a scary fight with tough veteran Glen Johnson just a few weeks ago. Cloud said he’ll go to Canada after reportedly being interested in a unification bout with Chad Dawson, had he defeated Pascal. Also his only conqueror, Carl Froch is interested in a match up after the Super Six, but says he won’t fight in Germany. Why Jean would fight there i really don’t know. Then there’s a surprising challenge from Nathan Cleverly. He may be a star in the future but right now he shouldn’t be getting involved with fighters of Jean’s quality.

As for Lucian Bute, the fellow Canadian has reportedly not spoken yet despite being called out by Pascal, and Jean says he will not go chasing opponents as he is the boss now. Also on Jean’s list is obviously Bernard Hopkins, lets just hope he has more luck getting a fight with ‘The Executioner’ than Chad Dawson did.

Jean is pretty much in the driving seat in the Light Heavyweight division, maybe he could finally dethrone Zsolt Erdei who doesn’t deserve a world title at all. Jean hopes to be back in the ring this December and we all look forward to seeing him fight again. Personally i’d like to see him in with Tavoris Cloud first, but let’s just wait and see.
