Froch says he’ll make Abraham “Wilt under the punches”

Image: Froch says he'll make Abraham "Wilt under the punches"By Scott Gilfoid: Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KO’s) is back to his old bold-talking self in his column today at Thisisnottingham.co.uk, saying “I’m a bigger puncher than Dirrell, and won’t let Arthur [Abraham] off the hook nor coast to a points win. I will make him wilt under the punches that I’ll rain down on him.” Oh brother. This I got to see. I hate to break this to Froch, but Dirrell is a bigger puncher than Froch. He’s also taller. God, I hope Froch makes it to the semi finals so Dirrell can take care of his unfinished business with Froch.

Froch, 33, takes on former middleweight champion Arthur Abraham on October 2nd in Monaco. Abraham had the misfortune of tangling with Dirrell in his last fight in March, and ended up getting a boxing lesson from Dirrell and losing the fight when Abraham lost his cool and blasted away at Dirrell after he had slipped on the canvas.

Before that, Abraham had been pretty much just a big punching bag for Dirrell to tee off on all night long. When Abraham would try to land his punches, they would miss badly, hitting only air. Now that Abraham has tasted the bittersweet taste of defeat, he will likely be as angry as a small bear and will be looking to tear Froch’s head off come October 2nd.

All I can say is I’m glad I’m not Froch. Abraham isn’t one to be stopped by things like fighters that have fallen on the canvas, so I expect Froch to end up hurt at some point, lying in a pool of blood on the canvas. I just hope that when Abraham connects, Froch is standing on his own two feet and not splayed on the canvas after slipping in the corner or on the canvas from a knockdown.

Froch is about to be drummed out of the Super Six tourney if he loses to Abraham. They won’t have any drummers to escort Froch out of the tourney, but that’s what’s going to happen to him. Froch has to find a way to win or he’s going to be taking a long flight home to Nottingham in defeat.

If Froch can’t even beat a guy like Abraham, who Dirrell totally dominated, it will be a pretty good signal that Froch should pack his bags and try fighting in another division. It only gets much worse once Abraham is out of the way. There’s Dirrell again, and that’s a certain loss, Andre Ward, who is not quite but almost as talented as Dirrell.

And then there’s Lucian Bute, another great fighter in the mold of Dirrell and Ward. Mikkel Kessler already beat Froch in his last fight, so I don’t even need to speak about him.
