Image: Pacquiao-Margarito: The WBC junior middleweight title will be on the line for the fightBy Chris Williams: Manny Pacquiao and Antonio Margarito won’t be just fighting for big bucks when they step in the ring on November 13th, they’ll also be fighting for the vacant World Boxing Council junior middleweight title. This will give Pacquiao a chance to fight for an 8th world title.

Of course, there will also likely be a catch weight involved for the fight. How much weight is anyone’s guess, but I’m thinking it will be at least three to four pounds. So instead of Pacquiao and Margarito fighting up to the 154 pound limit, the fight will take place at either 150 or 151, if not a little less than that. This will enable Pacquiao to have a sufficient handicap so he’s not roughed up as much by the bigger, stronger Margarito.

The fight will obviously go for the standard $50, so hopefully Arum stacks the undercard with quality fights instead of the usual mismatches that are often take place on cards like this. I’m not really interested in seeing John Duddy fight on the undercard nor do I really want to see Yuri Foreman against some nobody.

When you have a fight involving Pacquiao, it seems like it’s a given that the undercard is going to be filled with mismatches and fighters that likely will never win a title. As far as the $50 goes, I think a fight between Pacquiao and Margarito is more like a $4.99 fight rather than a $50. The reason is simple.

When you have a mismatch fight going in, it should be steeply discounted so as not to turn off fans and to attract other newer fans. The worst thing you can do is have some slop shuffled at you and then be expected to purchase it.

When you go to a restaurant, and you know the food is going to be bad because you smell it, you wouldn’t be eager to pay big bucks to eat it. And if you did, you probably wouldn’t come back to the restaurant ever.

This is why when you have a mismatch like Pacquiao-Margarito going into the fight, I think it’s important for it to be discounted so as not to upset the long time boxing fans of Pacquiao and then to attract newer fans.

I don’t know about you, but I don’t see Margarito vs. Pacquiao as a legitimate $50 fight. I would if Margarito hadn’t been bounced around the ring so badly by Shane Mosley last year in his 9th round TKO loss. If Margarito had fought a live body during his comeback fight, I’d feel a lot more interested in paying the full $50 to see the Pacquiao-Margarito fight.

However, beating some guy I never heard of before doesn’t count towards Margarito rebuilding his credibility as a fighter, to me. He’s got to do more than that to make me believe in him. This is why I see this as some steak that smells two years old and no longer eatable. Since Margarito hasn’t looked good in two years, I think his fight with Pacquiao should be steeply discounted.
