Floyd Mayweather Jr. – Why can’t he be left in peace?

By Simon Sheppard: Floyd Mayweather finally broke his silence. Not with his usual fanfare of doing things. Not with his usual trash and brash talk. No, he was surprisingly subdued. Out of character, one may think.

He uttered a few sentences, a few simple words. “I’m not interested in rushing to do anything,” “I’m not really thinking about boxing right now,”
“Like I said, I’m just supporting my family and relaxing,” “That’s what I’m doing right now.”

Those are his words. Now what I really find irksome is that why does everybody have to twist and distort those words?

Was there a mention of the 50/50 purse split? No, I cant even find the number 5 in those sentences. Was there ever a mention of his uncle Roger there? Yes, I’m sure I can compose the word ‘Roger’ from the letters from those sentences, but did Floyd ever mention him? No. Unless ventriloquism is one of his talents. Why has everybody turned into a clairvoyant mind-reader all of a sudden? What is so hard to understand in those straight forward statements?

Leave the man be.

Why does everybody have to put words into his mouth? Did he say “I didn’t agree to the terms?” I can’t find them anywhere in his statements.
Did he say “They haven’t met my demands?” For the life of me, I’m analyzing his words with a microscope, but, no dice, couldn’t find anything even remotely synonymous.

People are just unbelievable.

Loyalty is a fine thing. It’s a good thing. But when it defies logic and common sense, when one is so blinded by adoration, then it borders on something that is not healthy.

Loyal fans of Floyd may then ask – “Why would my boy Floyd be at fault?” “Nahhh, my boy could not be at fault. He could never be at fault.
Blame the father, blame the uncle, blame Arum, blame Pacquiao, blame the sun shining, blame all the boxing fans for wanting this fight, but never, ever, blame my boy FLoyd.”

They might say – “My boy Floyd is always right.” He disrespected Dr. Martin Luther King, most of his fans would ask, “Who?” He said he’s greater than Ali and Robinson, they’ll reply with -“Ya’ know what, he’s right.” And it’s their opinion. They are perfectly entitled to it.

You might argue that it’s the same with fans of Pacquiao. I agree to a point, but the big difference is Pacquiao strives so much to be liked. The complete opposite of Floyd Mayweather Jr.

It’s like the usual story of the battered housewife. When the doctor asks her about the broken ribs, she’ll reply – “she fell off the stairs.”
When asked about the bruised eye, she’ll say – “she hit it on a cupboard.” But least in this case, it’s comprehensible. Maybe she fears for her life, maybe she fears for her children. Maybe she doesn’t want to end up with a broken family.

Or maybe, just maybe, beyond human logic, she really adores her husband that much. So much that she puts up with the beating, and suffering and humiliation. I hate to think that this is the case with the fans of Floyd Mayweather.

Unless Floyd is taking his vacation on a plateau somewhere in Timbuktu, he has surely heard of the proposals. He has surely heard of the ESPN announcer uttering the word “coward” with his name, of which every English dictionary all state the same meaning. He is aware of all this. And his reply are contained in those statements. No more, no less.

Leave the man be.

Nobody can force him to fight right now. Nobody, not even his legion of fans can force him to. Not even 50M dollars can make him fight.
Not Golden Boy Promotions, not HBO. Not even ESPN, who had one of the co-hosts calling him a coward. Nobody, not one.

But wait,…maybe there is someone. Not exactly a someone. More of a ‘something.’

The Internal Revenue Service. Yes…….the IRS.

Until then, why can’t Floyd Mayweather Jr. be left in peace?
