Erik Morales vs. Limond on September 11th

By Chris Williams: Former super bantamweight, featherweight and super featherweight champion Erik “El Terrible” Morales (49-6, 34 KO’s) will be making his second fight of his comeback against lightweight Willie Limond (33-2, 8 KO’s) in Mexico City or possibly Tijuana, Mexico. Morales, 33, is fighting at welterweight now and hopes to get a shot against one of the champions in the near future.

However, Morales looks nothing like his former self. His once lean physique now has a coat of fat around his midsection and fat is visibly hanging from his sides. Morale’s once impressive speed and work rate have slowed down dramatically.

In his first comeback fight against Jose Alfaro last March, Morales won a 12 round unanimous decision. I had Alfaro easily winning the fight eight rounds to four. It wasn’t a close fight from what I saw. Morales looked totally shot, unable to pull the trigger in every round and getting badly outworked by the younger, less well known Alfaro.

It was one of the worst decisions I’ve seen in years. I find it hard to imagine that Morales can beat a fighter like Limond, who although flawed, still looks a lot better than what I saw of Morales in his comeback fight. Morales retired from boxing in 2007 following a close 12 round unanimous decision loss to David Diaz.

That was Morale’s 4th consecutive defeat and a pretty good sign that he had little left. Morales looked great back then compared to how he performed against Alfaro in his comeback fight. Words can’t describe how poor Morales looked, and I think he’s really kidding himself if he thinks he can fight for a title.

I think, boxing being what it is, Morales might actually get a title shot against one of the welterweight champions, but it will be a dreadful fight to watch if you’re a fan of competitive fights and like Morales a lot. He would be badly over-matched against all of the welterweight champions and likely knocked out by all of them.

Morales really needs to move back down in weight to the featherweight division where he might have a chance to compete. I doubt he would be able to take the weight off without being weakened. However, he at least might have a chance of doing okay in that division, which is more than I say about his chances in the welterweight division. He’s too small, too fat and too slow at this weight.
