Roy Jones Jr. to work the Cotto-Foreman fight for HBO this Saturday

By Matt Stein: According to Dan Rafael of ESPN, former HBO boxing analyst Roy Jones Jr. will be back at his old analyst job for HBO this Saturday night for the Miguel Cotto vs. Yuri Foreman fight at Yankee Stadium. Jones, 41, will be replacing analyst Emanuel Steward, who will be in the corner of his fighter Miguel Cotto for the fight and will be unavailable to work the fight for HBO. This won’t be a permanent replacement, however, as Steward will be back with HBO after Saturday’s fight.

Jones previously worked as an HBO boxing analyst for nine years, from 1996 to 2005, at which point he was reportedly fired. Jones will be working Saturday’s Cotto-Foreman fight alongside Max Kellerman and Jim Lampley. This should be interesting because Jones was a good analyst while with HBO and seemed to lighten the atmosphere at times with humor.

At time, it was hard to understand him, though, because of Jones’ habit of speaking rapidly when excited. Hopefully, this leads to a full-time gig for Jones at HBO, Showtime or ESPN. He’s certainly got the experience for the job. Jones’ boxing career has taken a turn for the worse lately, with losses to Bernard Hopkins, Danny Green and Joe Calzaghe occurring in the past two years. At this point, Jones is just fighting for the love of the sport but not having much luck in beating top tier opposition
