Image: Mosley could fight Sergio Martinez or Mora next - NewsBy Dan Ambrose: 38-year-old Shane Mosley (46-6, 39 KO’s) could be fighting either WBC middleweight champion Sergio Martinez (45-2-2, 24 KOs) next or former World Boxing Council light middleweight champion Sergio Mora (22-1-1, 6 KO’s) , according to Fighthype.com. Personally, I think that’s a crummy idea for Mosley to do, and I can see him getting badly schooled by both of these fighters. I can kind of see why Mosley might want to fight them.

After all, Miguel Cotto recently revived his sagging career by beating the feather-fisted WBA junior middleweight champion Yuri Foreman on June 5th at Yankee Stadium. Mosley might think that he can duplicate that kind of win and work wonders on his own career. There’s one problem with that, though. Mosley had problems with the speed of Floyd Mayweather Jr. in his one-sided 12 round decision loss on May 1st, and Martinez and Mora are somewhat similar to Mayweather with their fighting style.

To be sure, they’re not nearly as fast as Mayweather, but they are plenty quick of hand and foot, and very hard to hit consistently. Mora was beaten by Vernon Forrest in their second fight in September 2008, but Forrest was also a lot taller than Mosley at 6’0″, and had a long reach that enabled him to connect with his shots against Mora.

In the case of Martinez, he’s very quick and very difficult to hit because of his speed and southpaw stance. He’s also bigger than Mosley and fights at middleweight. He woud obviously be willing to fight Mosley at a catch weight of 155, but Mosley still would be the much smaller fighter and putting on weight to get to 155 may make Mosley slower and more vulnerable than he already is. At 38, Mosley might be over-matched against both Mora and Martinez.

Mosley turns 39 in September, and that’s pretty ancient for a welterweight. It’s unclear what Mosley is looking for in terms of a big payday. He already fought Mayweather, and got a nice payday in that fight, but if he’s hoping that Manny Pacquiao will start looking his way, he might be out of luck because Pacquiao is probably only going to be fighting only once or twice more against Top Rank fighters and then retiring. Mayweather already beat Mosley, so he’s probably not going to fight him against.

Miguel Cotto, who already beat Mosley by a 12 round decision in 2007, might possibly fight Mosley, but only if Mosley is able to pick up a good win. Sadly, I don’t think Cotto would be interested in fighting Mosley if he gets outclassed by Mora or Martinez. Mosley might be better off waiting around and trying to make a deal with Cotto’s promoter Bob Arum rather than taking on Martinez or Mora for less money.
