Froch wants Green to beat Ward

Image: Froch wants Green to beat WardBy Scott Gilfoid: Former WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KO’s) wants Allan Green (29-1, 20 KO’s) to beat WBA super middleweight champion Andre Ward (21-0, 13 KO’s) in their upcoming Super Six tournament fight on June 19th, at the Oracle Arena, in Oakland, California. In an article at Thisisnottingham.co.uk, Froch explains his reasoning’s for wanting Green to win, saying “The Americans are so pro Ward and [Andre] Dirrell that I’d like Green to win. He has come from nowhere to replace Jermain Taylor. He is a big puncher and Ward isn’t and I think it would spice things up if he knocked Ward out.”

A few things: First of all, Green isn’t someone that has come out of nowhere. Boxing fans in the United States are well aware of who Green is because he’s been fighting on television for some time. Unfortunately, he’s been getting matched up against B level fighters during his television outings, so we haven’t seen if he’s any good. We did see Green lose to Edison Miranda three years ago and he didn’t exactly sparkle in his last bout against Tarvis Simms.

Actually, Green looked close to horrible in that fight. At any rate, Green isn’t coming out of nowhere to replace Taylor. Second of all, Green isn’t as huge a puncher as Froch thinks. Sure, Green can hit hard, but I really think he’s much more of a puncher than Ward. He might hit a little harder but enough to where you would take notice and make a big fuss out of it. I think Froch has seen some highlight video of Green on YouTube against one of his B level opponents and is seeing more into Green’s power than what’s actually there. He punches okay but he’s not someone that is going to punch his way through the Super Six competition.

Part of me wonders if Froch is really hoping that Green can knock off Ward because he might see Ward as someone he can’t beat and wants someone else to do the job for him so he doesn’t have to risk getting beaten again. I don’t see Froch beating Ward. As much as I’m not impressed with Froch at all, I think Froch could at least beat a guy like Green. Unless Froch has slipped from the damage from his tough fight with Andre Dirrell or in his loss to Mikkel Kessler. However, I do think Froch could probably beat Green.

That’s not saying a whole, though, because I don’t rate Green and I think Froch is the next weakest link in the Super Six chain after him. Froch has seemed kind of grumpy ever since he lost to Kessler and is talking about pulling out of the tournament if he’s forced to fight his next opponent Arthur Abraham in Germany. It’s not even necessary to threaten to pull out.

He only had to tell them that he didn’t want to fight there but Froch has been immediately talking about pulling out. It’s not interesting seeing Froch all stressed out and upset about his fight with Abraham. It looks to me like Froch is really worried about losing the fight and being drummed out of the Super Six tournament. The dude needs to keep it together like Abraham.

I didn’t see Abraham all upset and threatening to pull out of the Super Six tournament after being schooled by Dirrell in his last fight. Abraham took his loss like a man and is eager to get back in the ring against Froch and knock him out. And I think Abraham will, unless Froch pulls out of the tournament and robs Abraham of the chance to blast him into the stratosphere with one of his uppercuts.
