Image: Chavez Jr. could fight the winner of the Cotto-ForemanBy Chris Williams: Number #1 ranked WBC junior middleweight contender Julio Cesar Chavez Jr. (41-0-1, 30 KO’s) could fight the winner of tonight’s bout between Miguel Cotto vs. Yuri Foreman bout at Yankee Stadium. It’s kind of a scary thought, but a reality none the less. The 24-year-old Chavez Jr., the son of boxing great Julio Cesar Chavez, has a fight coming up against middleweight contender John Duddy on June 26th at the Alamodome, in San Antonio, Texas. If Chavez wins that fight, then he would likely be put in with the winner of the Cotto-Foreman fight by Top Rank promoter Bob Arum.

In an interview with Notifight.com, Chavez Jr. says “Hopefully, I beat John Duddy first and then think about that fight [facing the Cotto-Foreman winner] because Duddy deserves my respect and if all goes well, I’d face the winner.” This, too, would likely be another fight that Arum puts in a stadium and would almost certainly wind up at the Cowboy Stadium, in Arlington, Texas, in order for Arum to take advantage of the large Mexican community in the nearby area.

Chavez Jr. is popular in Mexico and would likely bring in a lot of fans for a fight against either Cotto or Foreman. You would have to figure that Chavez Jr. would have next to no chance of beating Foreman or Cotto based on the way that Chavez has struggled against the B and C level fighters that he’s been put in with during his career. Even Duddy, a fringe middleweight contender, amounts to being a tremendous step up in class for Chavez Jr. to be taking.

A lot of people think Chavez Jr. will lose that fight. However, Chavez is now being trained by trainer Freddie Roach at the Wild Card Gym, in Los Angeles, California. Roach has been known to work miracles with badly flawed fighters like Chavez Jr., so there’s a chance that Roach can fix the countless flaws that Chavez has in his game or at least fixes enough for Chavez Jr. to squeak by Duddy. It’s certainly within the realm of possibilities that Chavez Jr. can beat Duddy, because he was recently beaten by Billy Lyell, a decent middleweight contender.

However, it might not be so interesting to see Chavez Jr. then matched up against Cotto or Foreman. That could very well end in a vicious slaughter with Chavez Jr. either schooled badly or broken in half by Cotto. Foreman would likely school Chavez Jr. badly, whereas Cotto would pretty much destroy Chavez Jr. unless Roach is capable of working huge miracles and turning Chavez Jr. into a whole different fighter. I kind of doubt it. I think Chavez will lose to Duddy, so all of this will be pointless.
