Schaefer thinks Haye is too fast for the Klitschko brothers

By Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer thinks that World Boxing Association (WBA) heavyweight champion David Haye (24-1, 22 KO’s) will be too fast for the Klitschko brothers when and if Haye fights the two. However, Schaefer is Haye’s American promoter, so you have to keep that in mind. Schaefer should worry less about whether or not Haye can beat the Klitschko brothers and more on trying to actually get him in the ring against either of them.

Thus far, Haye has either disappeared while negotiating or come up with injury that prevented him from fighting them. In an article at the Dailymail, Schaefer says “Wladimir and Vitali have been dominating for a while, but without really bringing the scene to life. David is the most thrilling heavyweight out there now and a fight between him and either of them [the Klitschko brothers] can truly energize the division.”

Haye is exciting, but then again he’s only been exciting against the older heavyweights like the 38-year-old Monte Barrett and the 38-year-old John Ruiz. Haye looked dreadful against 36-year-old Nikolay Valuev, barely beating him by a 12 round decision and running all night long. The Haye that fought on that night would have lost a lopsided 12 round decision against the Klitschko brothers. Haye would have to show more courage if he would hope to beat the Klitschko brothers, because he wouldn’t get the job done throwing only 10 punches per round.

Also, Haye’s jabs wouldn’t be landing because the Klitschko brothers would be keeping him at the distance with their much longer reach and much better jabs. Haye would be limited to an occasional pot shot. I think Haye would be anything but exciting against either of the Klitschko, but I don’t blame Schaefer for preaching about how great Haye is. That’s his job.

Schaefer says “I will be having talks in Europe to try to secure a sensible deal for everybody, because much as Haye wants these fights above all others the negotiations have to be fair. I firmly believe his fight with Wladimir will happen later this year. I also believe David will go on to beat both Klitschkos. They are methodical fighters and he will be too fast and original for them, even though they are bigger men.”

I see Haye as a combination of Danny Williams and Eddie Chambers. I see him running around the ring, taking jabs to the head and caught with hooks and right hands. I expect him to run all night long against Vitali and I don’t think he’ll last long against Wladimir. Once he gets caught with a left hook it will be over. Haye does have fast hands but he fights timid much of the time and is more of a pot shot fighter than a classic slugger. To beat the Klitschko brothers, Haye would have to stand in front of them, throwing lots of punches and would need a strong chin.

Unfortunately, Haye won’t stand in front of them, he won’t throw enough punches and his chin won’t be good enough to keep him upright. I also don’t think the fight will be made between Haye and the Klitschko brothers. He’ll probably price himself out of the negotiations and settle for trying to milk his WBA title against the existing opposition in the heavyweight division, apart from the Klitschko brothers, Odlanier Solis, Denis Boytsov, Chris Arreola and Samuel Peter.
