Image: Schaefer now hoping Mayweather-Mosley breaks 4 million PPV buysBy Chris Williams: Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer’s feet seem to be not on the ground as the fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Shane Mosley approaches for this Saturday night. Schaefer had previously made the bold prediction that the Mayweather-Mosley fight would make 3 million pay-per-view buys, which would beat the record of 2.4 million set between Mayweather and Oscar De La Hoya in 2007.

However, now Schaefer is saying his goal is for the bout to reach an absurd 4 million PPV buys, a figure that doesn’t realistic given how that the Mayweather-Mosley fight has one huge star in Mayweather and slightly less star in the 38-year-old Mosley. In an article at ESPN, Schaefer says “My goal is not to break 3 million homes; it is to break 4 million homes.” Fat chance that happens.

The Mayweather-Mosley fight doesn’t seem to have anywhere near the same amount of hype as the De La Hoya vs. Mayweather fight from three years ago. That fight was nonstop hype. The Mayweather-Mosley fight, in contrast, didn’t really start picking up steam until this week. That’s probably not enough interest for this fight to break 3 million PPV buys, much less 4 million.

There seems to be something lacking in generating excitement for this fight. Maybe it needed Mosley to have been active in the past year and to have beaten someone like Andre Berto instead of Antonio Margarito, who Mosley defeated a year ago in January. The bout is surely going to be an interesting one unless I miss my guess. Mosley in an all action fighter who never is in a dull fight, whereas Mayweather is the opposite of that, often having dull, safety first fights. Mosley might be able to make Mayweather fight and bring out the best in him. That’s what most boxing fans are hoping for, at least.
