By Sean McDaniel: Former WBC light welterweight champion Junior Witter (37-3-2, 22 KO’s) will be making a comeback soon against either welterweight contender Alfonso Gomez or Victor Puiu (18-1-2, 9 KO’s) in July or September, according to thestar.co. Witter, now 36, has been literally falling apart in the past couple of years, suffering one serious injury after another. Witter’s latest injury was a cruciate ligament tear, which he suffered while jobbing. Witter has had surgery to fix that problem and has been healing for the past 12 rounds since the injury occurred.

Before that, Witter injured his elbow in a loss to Devon Alexander in August 2009. Witter was stopped in the 8th round of that fight. Beyond that, Witter had a second elbow injury, and required surgery to repair that one as well. Witter also broke one of his hands. With all those injuries, it’s hard to see Witter having much luck, especially if he moves up in weight to take on bigger fighters like Gomez.

Witter mostly relied on his speed and his unorthodox style of fighting, but with age and injuries slowing him down, it’s going to be difficult for him to get back to where he once was as a fighter. Witter has been beaten in two out of his last three fights. It may be just a coincidence that he’s starting to take losses all of a sudden or it could be that Witter is starting to show his age.

He’s going to have to take things slow, pick out opponents he thinks he can beat and try to get another shot at one of the champions. If Witter stays at light welterweight, then he needs to stay away from Timothy Bradley and Alexander, both of which beat him already, and focus instead on going after the soft-chinned WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan. Witter would have puncher’s chance of stopping Khan, but not much more than that.

Khan has better hand speed and perhaps a little better power. However, if Witter were to catch him with a halfway decent shot, he could end up taking Khan out. Witter is currently ranked #8 by the World Boxing Council in the welterweight champion. The champion of that division is Andre Berto, who I don’t think Witter match up well against at this late point in Witter’s career. I think Witter could possibly beat Gomez, but it wouldn’t be easy. Gomez is a pressure fighter and can punch well. He’ll make Witter work hard and will punish the older fighter if he gets chosen to fight Witter.
