Alfonso Gomez defeats Yoshihiro Kamegai

gomezBy Dan Ambrose: 34-year-old former two time world title challenger Alfonso Gomez (25-6-2, 12 KOs) kept his career alive on Friday night in defeating #12 WBC, #12 WBO, #15 IBF welterweight contender Yoshihiro Kamegai (25-3-1, 22 KOs) by a 10 round unanimous decision at the Fantasy Springs Report Casino in Indio, California.

The final judges’ scores were 98-91, 98-91 and 98-91. Those scores were a little off though, because Gomez gassed out badly in the last three rounds and clearly lost those rounds unless you want to count holding and running as winning rounds.

Alfonso Gomez defeats Ed Paredes

gomez78778By Jim Dower: Fighting for the first time in two years, former two-time world title challenger Alfonso Gomez (24-6-2, 12 KO’s) defeated the stronger but less busier Ed Paredes (35-4-1, 23 KO’s) by a 10 round unanimous decision on Wednesday night at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino in Las Vegas, Nevada.

Paredes, 29, was given credit for two knockdowns, one in the 4th and the other in the 6th, but neither of them seemed legitimate.

Gomez’s win snaps a 13-fight win streak by the 29-year-old Paredes that stretches all the way back to 2009. Unfortunately, all of the wins came against weaker opposition.

Alfonso Gomez vs. Ed Paredes on July 9th in Las Vegas, Nevada

Shawn Porter vs Alfonso Gomez(Photo credit: Esther Lin/Showtime) By Allan Fox: 33-year-old former two-time world title challenger Alfonso Gomez (23-6-2, 12 KO’s) will be turning to the ring after a 2 year absence to fight #7 WBC, #10 WBA welterweight contender Ed Paredes (35-3-1, 23 KO’s) in a scheduled 10 round bout at the Hard Rock Hotel and Casino, Las Vegas, Nevada, USA.

Gomez hasn’t fought since losing a 10 round unanimous decision to Shawn Porter two years ago in July of 2012 in a fairly close fight. Before that fight, Gomez had been stopped in the 6th round by WBA junior middleweight champion Saul “Canelo” Alvarez in September of 2011. Gomez gave Canelo some problems in that fight with his combination punching early on. It wasn’t until Canelo really stepped it up that he was able to get a stoppage, but even that it was a situation where the referee pulled the plug on the fight a little too quickly.

Victor Ortiz faces Alfonso Gomez on Broner-Maidana card on December 14th

ortiz54By Eric Thomas: Former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KO’s) will face Alfonso Gomez (22-5-2, 11 KO’s) on the December 14th Showtime at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Ortiz was supposed to have been fighting IBF junior middleweight champion Carlos Molina, but the International Boxing Federation refused to sanction the fight because Ortiz wasn’t ranked in the top 15 at 154, was coming off of two knockout losses, and hadn’t fought in a year and a half.

Ortiz-Gomez isn’t as interesting a fight than the Ortiz-Molina match-up, but that’s the best that Golden Boy Promotions could get under the circumstances. Ortiz is coming off of a broken jaw he suffered in his last fight against Josesito Lopez last year in June, and Golden Boy doesn’t want to match him too tough yet before he’s had a chance to get the rust out of his system from his time off.

Victor Ortiz vs. Alfonso Gomez possible for September on Arreola-Mitchell card

ortiz33By Allan Fox: There’s talk of former WBC welterweight champion Victor Ortiz (29-4-2, 22 KO’s) facing 32-year-old former two-time title challenger Alfonso Gomez (23-6-2, 12 KO’s) in September on the same card as the heavyweight match-up between Chris Arreola and Seth Mitchell, according to Steve Kim.

The date Golden Boy Promotions is looking at is September 6th or 14th.

Matching Ortiz-Gomez with Arreola-Mitchell makes a lot of sense because an Arreola vs. Mitchell fight card would likely not attract a lot of attention unless it’s paired with a good undercard name like Ortiz. I can’t say the Ortiz vs. Gomez fight is a good one, not now at least. It might have been a good fight 2 or 3 years ago when Gomez was fighting a little better.

Saul Alvarez has a tough future after easy Gomez bout – Angulo or Martirosyan loom ahead

Image: Saul Alvarez has a tough future after easy Gomez bout - Angulo or Martirosyan loom aheadBy Dan Ambrose: WBC junior middleweight champion Saul Alvarez (37-0-1, 27 KO’s) faces No.7 ranked WBC contender Alfonso Gomez (23-4-2, 12 KO’s) on September 17th in Los Angeles. For the 21-year-old Alvarez, this could be the last easy fight before he’s faced with the tough task of fighting either Vanes Martirosyan or Alfredo Angulo, both very tough fighters and arguably a lot better than the guys Alvarez has been fighting.
