Arreola: “He [Adamek] is going to be a hit and run boxer”

Image: Arreola: “He [Adamek] is going to be a hit and run boxer”By Jason Kim: Heavyweight Chris Arreola (28-1, 25 KO’s) expects for Polish heavyweight Tomasz Adamek (40-1, 27 KO’s) to move a lot this Saturday in their fight at the Citizens Business Bank Arena, in Ontario, California. Arreola, 29, will have the youth and size advantage against the 33-year-old Adamek, who will probably come into the fight at a little better than 220. If Adamek comes in at 230, you can bet that he’ll be slower and less able to run the way that he’s accustomed to.

Arreola says “He’s [Adamek] is going to be a hit and run boxer. I am going to have to bring my boxing skills to the ring. I’m going to have to put the pressure on him in order to fight.” Arreola is probably right. Adamek moved constantly in wide circles in his last fight against Jason Estrada, rarely stopping for more than a second to land his shots. Adamek makes no bone about it. He doesn’t want to get hit and plans on moving and punching to try the win the fight using his speed rather than his strength.

If this was a cruiserweight fight, we’d likely see the opposite from Adamek. At that weight, Adamek was a slugger and one of the biggest punchers in the division. At heavyweight, Adamek has only average power and with his small frame, he doesn’t have the size to stand in front of the bigger heavyweights for 12 rounds. Adamek also doesn’t have to power to take out the heavyweights like he was at light heavyweight and cruiserweight.

Arreola says he’s going to be coming into this Saturday’s fight weighing in the neighborhood the 230s or 240s. Arreola is currently weighing a little over 250. It’s hard to see the logic in melting down 10+ pounds with less than a week to go before the fight. Arreola could end up feeling weak and weight drained if he does this. The time to take off the lard was earlier in the training camp, but not now that the fight is down to the last five days.

An usual thing to note about this fight is the height difference. Although Arreola is listed as 6’4”, he looks to be at least an inch shorter than the 6’1” Adamek when the two are standing eye to eye. Unless Adamek has been wearing elevator shoes lately, it would appear that Arreola’s listed height is bogus, because in every photo that I’ve seen of the two fighters in the past couple of months, Adamek has always looked at least an inch taller than Arreola.
