Froch calls Calzaghe a “strange guy”

Image: Froch calls Calzaghe a “strange guy”By Sean McDaniel: World Boxing Council super middleweight champion Carl Froch fired back at former super middleweight champion Joe Calzaghe in an interview at Livefight.com, saying “I think Joe’s a bit of a strange guy if I’m honest. And I don’t mean that nastily, but I really think he is a grump. Like a Welsh Victor Meldrew.”

Earlier this week, Calzaghe had given an interview at City A.M., saying this about Froch: “He [Froch] won a title that I gave up and hasn’t stopped b-tching about everybody. Because he’s not making as much money and not getting on TV, I think he’s bitter against the whole world. He’s like a spoilt little bloody b-tch.”

It was only a matter of time before Froch came back with his own response to this comment, as he and Calzaghe have had an ongoing war of words for the past two years due to Calzaghe showing little interest in giving Froch a shot at his super middleweight titles. However, after Calzaghe retired from boxing in 2009, he seemed to have mostly good things to say about Froch’s boxing fans, wishing him the best. But that all changed this week when Calzaghe suddenly re-opened the old war of words and fired off a fresh round of comments at Froch.

Froch, who is probably as confused about Calzaghe’s turn around as I am, says “One minute he gives me credit for my career and ‘good luck’ in the Super Six – then 3 months later comes out with this. He’s obviously just after a bit of publicity.”

It’s unclear what Calzaghe is hoping to achieve by talking about Froch at this point. Unless Calzaghe is going to step back in the ring and attempt to fight Froch, it seems silly for him to be still talking about Froch. Calzaghe doesn’t appear to be interested in staging a comeback judging by some of his recent comments.

Calzaghe will be 38-years-old next month, and even if he did make a comeback, he might have lost too much to beat a fighter like Froch. Calzaghe hasn’t fought since beating 39-year-old Roy Jones Jr. by a 12 round decision in November 2008. Froch wouldn’t be available to fight Calzaghe until Froch completes his participation in the Super Six tourney, which should be 2011. By then, Calzaghe would be 39 and probably well past it.

Froch says “Along with his [Calzaghe] cherished record that he always blathers on about, that has more question marks on it than The Riddler’s cat suit. Those are the only two subjects he mentions in every single tedious interview. He can only dine out on that record for so long…At the end of the day, Joe Calzaghe is yesterday’s news.”

Since his retirement last year, there has been very little news about Calzaghe, and the more time that goes by it seems to be less and less. Hopefully, this isn’t Calzaghe’s attempt to stay in the public eye by commenting on Froch. If it is, he should do Froch a favor and try to give him a fight when Froch gets through with the Super Six tournament.

“I called him [Calzaghe] out for two years, closed in on him until he had to vacate or fight me, and we all know which option he took so we’ll just leave it at that,” Froch says.
