Image: Pacquiao-Mayweather: Who should compromise the blood testingBy David Anderson: Due to the fact that the mega fight of Pacquiao – Mayweather is already dead. Let us again visit the blood test demand that the camp of Mayweather demanded. Let us align what his camp demanded to what the former commissioner (Margaret Goodman) of NSAC stated.

First statement, “But if I would be a part of the commission at this time, it would be an unreasonable request for the commission to do unless this was something contractually done by the two fighters [Floyd Mayweather and Manny Pacquiao]. Neither fighter has ever tested positive for anything before.” With this being said by the former commissioner, why would they demand blood testing when in fact both of them were tested negative for all of their fights that happen in Vegas. So you may wonder “if urine test is capable of testing all of the prohibited drugs?”

Again, we are not in the position to validate this thing efficient or inefficient because no scientific article has been published to claim such fact. This also apply to Mayweather and Golden Boy Promotions camp, do they have sufficient data to demand such request? If not, Lets hope in the future they will just drop down their request.

Second statement, “Blood-testing, number one, it’s not convenient. You would have to have a doctor or a certified technician or a nurse draw the blood. There is more risk of infection, you have to worry about handling it the correct way. So it would take a lot more to draw blood, but for most things, urine tests are adequate.” This statement supports the first. How can we be sure that blood will be taken carefully as possible? For sure other would say that expert nurse and doctor will draw the blood if ever but let us not take away the fact that if accident happens,(that is why they are called accident even we do put their trust on the handler), fighters can not backed out. That being said, even Pacquiao proposed that blood may be taken 2hours before the fight has started. Which I think, no significant difference when you do RANDOM blood test 24 hours before the fight.

Third statement, “But if you want to check for everything that you need to check for, given the current situation of drugs that are being abused by athletes to enhance their performances, then you should check for everything that you can check for, which does include things that can only be checked in the blood.” Again, we will ask, what drugs do PBF and his camp wanted? Which will lead to the next statement. In addition, it is not mentioned elsewhere that all of these drugs can only be detected thru blood, for there are also drugs that can sufficiently detected by urine and urine only.

Fourth statement, “If you’re going to be checking for drugs of abuse like narcotics, pain drugs and stimulants, then urine tests are just as good. And you can test for anabolic steroids in urine tests, which are good too. That’s not so much the problem.” With this being said, why would blood test necessary. Again, if its steroids is what the PBF camp wanted, then perhaps for the fight continue, urine samplings is sufficient, beside Pac agreed to have his blood drawn before and after the fight but not 48 hours or less. Thus, the Mayweather camp can compromise they’re demand, they will still be taking blood from Pacquiao and as the commission stated, urine test is sufficient for anabolic steroids.

Fifth statement. “You could test for blood-doping by repeatedly checking somebody’s blood count or saying that somebody can’t compete if their blood count is above a certain amount — and that’s what they do in cycling, and I think that’s what they do in the Olympics. If you have too high of a blood count, you’re not allowed to compete until your blood count comes back down. Well, you say, ‘What’s the big deal about that, if you can do it naturally?’ People can train at high altitudes and get their blood count up.” In boxing, most of this fighters train at high altitude to increase their stamina, they only stop doing this when it is very close on fight date. Thus for boxers, false result may be obtained from blood test, unless it is mentioned in respectable journals that blood test is fool proof.

From above statements, one can conclude that the former commissioner agreed that blood testing could serve as an additional tool for drug monitoring, however, urine proves to be more convenient and if the other camp wanted if one boxer use steroids or not then urine is sufficient. To answer the title, the 2 day random testing should be compromised, beside stating the fact that Pac would give unlimited urine sample and blood sample on specific time frame.

As for the window of blood testing, I think before anyone would comment, I would like to suggest that they do a proper press conference for this. One camp has proposed that they agree to give blood samples 5 days or above from the fight, however other camp negated that they say Pac did not agree on the 14 day window. It is better if they telecast what they say or rather put it on Youtube so we could say they are man enough to be responsible for their actions and answer who duck who.
