The Super Six leading the way: Will the rest follow?

mayweather452354By Andrew Muldoon: It takes a lot to get an idea as big and as brilliant as Showtime’s Super Six tournament up and running, which is why a hell of a lot of credit must go to the people involved. Showtime, promoters, sponsors, sanctioning bodies and most of important of all the fighters themselves. Egos have been put to one side to give the fans the most exciting concept to hit the sport in 20 years which is highly commendable. I’m not going to go on about who will win or who will lose, or what i thought of the first two bouts, this article is about the tournament itself and the effect I hope it will have on the rest of boxing.

Just imagine a tournament welterweight for example, there would have to be some serious co-operation between the big names to pull it off it but it is do-able, we only have to look at whats going on right now at 168. I’m sure most will agree with me that 147 division now is the deepest talent wise and a tourney there would be the biggest event in the sport ever. Floyd Mayweather Jr., Miguel Cotto, Manny Pacquiao, Shane Mosley, Antonio Margarito, Joshua Clottey. (I haven’t included Paul Williams because he hasn’t fought at the weight for a while now, or Andre Berto, I know he’s the World Boxing Council welterweight champ but seven is an odd number and eight I feel would be too much and I think people would rather see Clottey instead, just my opinion). The match-ups that come out of these names are mouthwatering, hate him or love him Antonio Margarito would be an absolute must in this, just for the controversy it would bring, a rematch with Cotto would do for starters. Mayweather vs Mosley, Sugar Shane finally getting to pits his wits against Floyd in the second super fight. Pacquiao against Clottey wouldn’t be short on boring either, when did you ever see Manny in a snooze-fest? them three fights alone are massive and that’s just the first round!

What I’m trying to get at is that we now have a breakthrough, we now know that no matter how big the name, it can be done with a little give and take. I know Ive used welterweight as an example but that is where i think you would have the most problems so if it were to be done at 147 then there’s nothing stopping the light-heavy, lightweight or any other weight for that matter from following suit. The UFC prides itself its best fighters fighting each other and anybody with half a brain will know that that just doesn’t happen in boxing but this could be boxing’s answer.

So to all involved in the super six take a bow and we thank you, not only for bringing us your innovative tournament but also possibly starting a new age of of championship fights.
