By Dennis Broadhurst: When the talented yet inexperienced Andre Dirrell faces Arthur Abraham I believe that he should beat him. In his first fight of the Super Six tournament. Dirrell lost a decision to solid Englishman Carl Froch on October 17th. In that fight it looked like Dirrell was scared of the powerful Froch and was certainly fighting on nervous energy. The fight proved to him that you cannot take a champion’s title by dancing around the ring all night, especially in their home town.
I know I once wrote an article saying that Dirrell schooled Froch but that was stupid and was not well thought. Although Dirrell exposed Froch in a way by showing us that he cannot move, but Froch also exposed Dirrell in a way by showing that he has ants in his pants when facing power. In Abraham’s first fight of the tournament, he destroyed Jermain Taylor with one punch in the twelfth round which was an impressive knockout having him leading in the tournament.
This win must be credited but if we think about it, Taylor was damaged goods after losing three of his previous four fights, two by knockout and has never had a solid chin or great stamina. Abraham fights behind a very high guard and often stands there just letting punches hit his guard and this lets him save enough energy to put loads of power behind every punch which will knockout most fighters if he catches them clean.
So I think that Dirrell should not try running too much from Abraham. I think he should move well, not expand to much energy hitting Abraham’s guard and use his good skill to avoid the wild shots of Abraham. We have seen that Dirrell has good power as he hurt the iron-jawed Carl Froch in his last fight and he certainly has good speed but in this fight he must fight like a man from the start instead of simply running for 10 rounds and then fighting two at the end.
If Dirrell moves too much then he will expand too much energy and Abraham who will just slowly plod forward with a tight guard will eventually catch him with a great shot and knock him out. Dirrell must come out and start strong and hit Abraham with hard shots from the start. If he does this then I see him winning a decision or if he fights extremely hard maybe a stoppage in the late rounds.
There is always the chance that “King” Arthur with his tight guard will just plod forward and Dirrell will try too hard to get to his head and won’t know what to do. This I think would result in Dirrell getting frustrated and knocked out by Abraham. Despite knowing that the fight could go either way. I am making a prediction that Dirrell will beat Abraham simply because of superior skill.
Saying this I shall not say it will be too easy as Abraham is a solid fighter and one must always be cautious when fighting someone of such power but I just think that Dirrell will be too skillful and will be wanting to prove his critics wrong after the Froch fight.
