Vargas to return in 2010? Cintron to fight Ramos on October 24th – news

By Eric Thomas: Former two time light middleweight champion Fernando Vargas (26-5, 22 KO’s) could be making a comeback in 2010, possibly against Hector Camacho Jr. (49-3-1, 27 KO’s). The only problem with that bout is what weight would the fight be fought at, because Camacho Jr. is a light middleweight and Vargas, now 32, would probably be lucky if he could make super middleweight.

In recent pictures, Vargas looks very heavy, well over 200 pounds. For him to take that kind of weight off, it would take some time for that to happen and the results might not be favorable for Vargas. But then again, Vargas would only be fighting Camacho Jr., a good fighter, but someone very beatable for an ex-champion like Vargas. Vargas is reportedly in training, trying to take off weight.

Vargas hasn’t fought since losing a 12 round majority decision to Ricardo Mayorga in 2007. Before that, Vargas lost two consecutive fights against Shane Mosley, bouts in which Vargas was stopped both times. Vargas hasn’t held a major title since losing his WBA light middleweight belt in a 11th round TKO loss seven years ago to Oscar De La Hoya. Vargas rebounded from that loss by winning four consecutive fights before being stopped by Mosley in the 10th round in February 2006.

Camacho Jr., 31, has a fight coming up on October 30th of this month against Yory Boy Campas. This is a fight that Camacho Jr. needs to win if he wants to keep alive any public interest in a future fight against Vargas. However, it won’t be an easy fight for Camacho Jr., because Campas, 38, is still a tough opponent despite having lost four out of his last six fights.

If Vargas does come back, you’ve got to figure he’ll have enough left to beat Camacho. Vargas would have the size and power advantage over Camacho and would probably dominate unless he’s really gone downhill as a fighter. But beyond a fight against Camacho, it’s questionable what Vargas could accomplish by continuing with his career. He might be able to pick out a couple named fighters to mix it up with for a good payday, but as far as taking on the champions, I wouldn’t give Vargas any chance of beating champions in the middleweight, super middleweight or light heavyweight divisions right now. Vargas looked really slow in his fight against Mayorga, and appeared to have lost much of his hand speed. His power was still present, but his hand speed and stamina appeared to have badly deteriorated with the time off from boxing.

Cintron turns down fight with Clottey

According to Primera Hora, Kermit Cintron (31-2-1, 27 KO’s) said that he’s not interested in fighting former welterweight champion Joshua Clottey on December 5th. Instead, Cintron, 29, has elected to fight a stay busy bout against Brazilian Juliano Ramos (15-2, 12 KO’s), a fighter who was recently stopped in the 6th round by Mike Jones last year.

It seems like Cintron would have been better off facing Clottey rather than Ramos, you would think. Cintron hasn’t fought since beating prospect Alfredo Angulo by a 12 round decision in May. Hopefully, Cintron isn’t resting on his laurels and wasting time. He needs to get busy and try to take on one of the champions, whether in the welterweight or light middleweight divisions.

I wouldn’t advise for Cintron to fight Sergio Martinez again, however, because Cintron had problems against Martinez and appeared to have been knocked out by Martinez after being dropped by a left hand. Cintron argued that it was caused by a head butt and the referee bought it and allowed the fight to continue. The bout was eventually scored as a 12 round draw. I had Cintron losing the fight by decision.

Clottey will be fighting either Luis Abregu and Kendall Holt. Obviously, Holt would be the better option, but he would be dangerous fight for Clottey to take. Holt is faster and probably has the better boxing skills.
