Mayweather is too smart for Pacquiao, says Fernando Vargas

floyd0012By Chris Williams: Former IBF/WBA junior middleweight champion Fernando Vargas is really looking forward to the mega-fight between Floyd Mayweather Jr and Manny Pacquiao this May. Vargas, 37, thinks the fight between them will be taking place, and he sees Mayweather as being far too intelligent for the 36-year-old Filipino star to handle in this fight.

Vargas points out that the Mayweather vs. Pacquiao fight isn’t as valuable as it once was due to Pacquiao having been exposed by Juan Manuel Marquez in their fight in 2012, but he’s still interested in seeing the fight.

Fernando Vargas’ comeback fight on hold due to illness

Image: Fernando Vargas' comeback fight on hold due to illnessBy Dan Ambrose: The long awaited comeback of former IBF/WBA junior middleweight champion Fernando Vargas (26-5, 22 KO’s) will have to wait a little longer, as the 33-year-old Vargas is ill with a case of bronchitis and pneumonia and won’t be able to make his April 16th fight date against super middleweight Henry Buchanan. It might be for the best, though, because Vargas might have been asking for a beating in that fight by taking on a quality fighter like that at such a high weight.

Fernando Vargas vs. Henry Buchanan on 4/16 – Boxing News

By Dan Ambrose: Former IBF/WBA junior middleweight champion Fernando Vargas (26-5, 22 KO’s) will be returning to the ring after 4 years out of action to face 32-year-old super middleweight Henry Buchanan (20-2, 13 KO’s) on April 16th. Speaking to ESPN, the 33-year-old Vargas said, “I took three years off and I’m still young. I’m excited about fighting again and I know I can win another world title.” It’s hard to vision a world where Vargas can ever win another major title.

Vargas-Camacho: Can Fernando Slim down enough to make this fight?

vargas6854353By Jim Dower: Last Friday night Hector Camacho Jr. (50-3-1, 27 KO’s) defeated Luis Ramon “Yory Boy” Campas in an ugly foul plagued 10 round split decision on October 30th. After the fight, former International Boxing Federation light middleweight champion Fernando Vargas (26-5, 22 KO’s) waddled into the ring, looking at least 100 pounds overweight from my estimate, and called out the 31-year-old Camacho Jr. for a fight. It appears that Camacho Jr. will be accepting the fight, because it isn’t like he has too many other options at this point in his career. While this might make a halfway decent fight to see on ESPN, I wonder if the obese looking Vargas can get down low enough to fight Camacho at 154.

Vargas to return in 2010? Cintron to fight Ramos on October 24th – news

By Eric Thomas: Former two time light middleweight champion Fernando Vargas (26-5, 22 KO’s) could be making a comeback in 2010, possibly against Hector Camacho Jr. (49-3-1, 27 KO’s). The only problem with that bout is what weight would the fight be fought at, because Camacho Jr. is a light middleweight and Vargas, now 32, would probably be lucky if he could make super middleweight.

Who’s More Shot? De La Hoya or Vargas

vargas46465By Chris Williams: If you had asked me this question a day before Oscar De La Hoya’s (39-6, 30 KOs)8th round beating at the hands of Manny Pacquiao on December 6th, I would have said that it was Fernando Vargas (26-5, 22 KOs), who has lost his last three fights. However, in comparing how truly terrible Oscar looked in his losing effort against Pacquiao compared to Vargas’ 12-round majority decision loss to Ricardo Mayorga in November 2007, I’d have to say that De La Hoya is by far the more shot fighter. Vargas, still a fresh 31, judging from his bout against Mayorga, still has a lot of power and reasonable speed left of his once impressive offensive skills.
