williams4643426By Steven Wain: On October 2nd at Bethnal Green’s York Hall the Prizefighter competition is once again on the bill featuring the heavyweights for a 3rd time. With one current British champion, three former British champions a gold medalist and 2 unbeaten boxers taking part, this could be the best Prizefighter yet. (For anyone who doesn’t no about the Prizefighter tournament it consist of 8 competitors, who fight 3 x 3 minute rounds, there is the quarter finals, semi finals and the final all on one night and the winner takes home a hefty £25,000.)

The Prizefighter tournament will feature:

36 year old Danny Williams (41-7-31 KO’s) is the current British champion and is probably the outright favourite to win the whole tournament. Williams last 3 fights consist of two lucky decision wins over John McDermott and one TKO loss to Albert Sosnowski.

Williams had this to say about the tournament:-

“When I heard a certain celebrity boxer was in there [meaning Audley Harrison], I knew I had to be in it. This Prizefighter is going to be off the hook!”

41 year old Michael Holden (10-9-6 KO’s) is a former British heavyweight title holder, however he has lost his last 3 fights, one of them was to fellow member of the tournament Michael Sprott by TKO.

Holden had this to say about the tournament:-

“Its mad init? It’s good for me to come back [after six years out] this way to show people that I’m serious. I’ve got a point to prove and I won’t over train this time.”

26 year old Coleman Barrett (8-0-2 KO’s) is a unbeaten Irishman, who doesn’t pack much of a punch only knocking out 2 of his 8 opponents, don’t expect his unbeaten record to last.

Barrett had this to say about the tournament:-

“When my manager put me forward I was pretty sure I’d get in cause they need a couple of loose cannons. I reckon I can beat them all- no doubt in my mind.”

37 year old Audley Harrison (23-4-17 KO’s) is an Olympic gold medallist who has seen many lows in his career. He has beaten Danny Williams, but has also lost to Michael Sprott.

Harrison had this to say about the tournament:-

“I have a history with most of the fighters in the tournament. I couldn’t have scripted my return any better. I intend to show my career is far from over.”

32 year old Scott Gammer (18-4-9 KO’s) is from Pembroke Dock,Wales, and is a former holder of the british heavyweight title. He has lost to Danny Williams and also lost his last 3 fights.

Gammer had this to say about the tournament:-

“it’s not just the tournament itself but what comes after it if you win; look at what happened to Sam Sexton and Martin Rogan after they won.”

28 year old Scott Belshaw (10-2-7 KO’s) lost his last fight to Manchester’s Tyson fury, however the Irish born boxer is not a walk over and will take some stopping.

Belshaw had this to say about the tournament:-

“After the Tyson Fury fight, I was surprised to be asked. I keep being recognised for all the wrong reasons! The main thing to me is showing people I’m not a mug.”

34 year old Michael Sprott (31-14-16 KO’s) is a brief holder of the British heavyweight title, he has had 3 fights with Danny Williams losing 2 and wining the latest one by points, he has been in the ring with the likes of Ruslan Chagaev so he’s another boxer not to be taken lightly, and my second favourite to win.

Sprott had this to say about the tournament:-

“The up-and coming guys will be hungry but you can’t buy experience. It’s good for me to get in the public eye as I haven’t fought in the UK for a while.”

23 year old Danny Hughes (6-0-1 KO’s) is an undefeated fighter from Sunderland, England. However just like Coleman Barrett I wouldn’t hold out much hope for him to keep his unbeaten record. He has little power proven with only 1 Knock Out in his 6 fight record.

Hughes had this to say about the tournament:-

“I think I’ll win it. It’s not worth 32k to lose my unbeaten record. I’m sparring John McDermott now and its going well. He’s giving me advice about the other fighters.”

I would have to say my money is on Danny Williams he is the most experience and, has been in with the best of them. The other boxer who I would put my money on is Michael Sprott as he has beaten some of the guys in the tournament already and is a pretty decent boxer, however as proven in previous Prizefighter tournaments anything can happen so it will be good to watch and see who will overcome the odds.
