Paul Williams Shuts Out Winky Wright

wright4342321By Sam Gregory: Last night’s main event is a scheduled 12 round middleweight bout between 37 year old southpaw Ronald “Winky” Wright and 27-year-old southpaw Paul “The Punisher” Williams.” This will be the first time Winky Wright has been in the ring since his loss to Bernard Hopkins in July of 2007. Paul Williams is coming off three straight TKO wins, two of them in the first round; his last fight was an eighth round stoppage of Verno Phillips last November.

The 6’1” Paul Williams is going into tonight’s fight with a record of 36 wins and 1 loss, 27 of the wins coming by way of knockout. Williams has an 82” reach, a 10” advantage over his opponent Winky Wright who is stepping in the ring tonight with a record of 51 wins, 2 loses and 1 draw; 25 of the wins coming by way of knockout.

Stepping into the ring for the first time in 21 months, Winky Wright is the clear underdog in this fight. Even though the two-time welterweight title holder Paul Williams is the favorite to win, the over and under is 11.5 rounds which means an early stoppage is unlikely.

In the first round both men looked sharp; Williams is throwing his stinging right jab and Wright countered and landed a solid right. Williams keeps picking up the pace as the round went on; a lot of punches were thrown by both men; Winky landed the harder shot in the round. Williams landed more and won the round.

Winky unloads with combination in the second round; Williams counters and uses the jab. Winky lands a single jab, Williams counters and lands a 4 punch combination. Williams threw 10-12 punches to Winky’s 2.

In the third round Williams is throwing from different angles and landing a solid right uppercut, lands a right cross. Williams is in control landing a variety of punches. Williams’s punches seem to be harder; he is also quicker and landing with multi-combination punches. Williams is winning 3 rounds to none on the unofficial score card.

Williams lands combination in the fourth, then ties up Winky. Winky landed a solid right but Williams stays in control, gets off with 3 and 4 punch combinations to ever one of Winky’s punches.

In the fifth round Winky stays active with his jab; the pace slows slightly. Williams throwing combinations but not as solid; Winky has his best round.

In the sixth round Williams lands 6 punch combination, lands a big left than right. Winky lands a big right hook that Williams walks into. Both men trade in the center of the ring. They tie up and Joe Cortez separates them. They’re still fighting at a very fast pace until the bell.

Between rounds Williams corner tells him not to trade and bang with Winky; “I don’t want you touching that body”.

In the seventh Williams is a head on the unofficial card 5 rounds to 1. Winky is busy throwing punches but Williams is landing the harder more solid punches. Winky’s face looks like he’s been in a tough fight. Williams is able to split Winky’s forearm defense.

In the eighth round Williams landed a right hook that rocked Winky. Williams combinations are faster and more accurate. Winky throws a right hand jab, Williams counters with a 4 and 5 punch combination to the body. Winky has landed some solid shots but Williams’ are harder and faster.

In the ninth Williams seems very at ease and landing combinations at will. Winky throwing jabs and over-hand right; Williams counters and lands more shots. This is a rough fight for Winky.

In the tenth Williams comes out throwing fast hard shots; Winky covering up and can’t get off quick enough. Winky is very determined and very game in this fight but he is outgunned in this fight by a younger quicker fighter.

Between rounds Winky’s corner tells him he’s behind and needs a stoppage.

In the eleventh round both men throw jabs, Williams lands with a good right hook. Winky is looking tired and out of gas; Williams throws and lands combinations like he did in the first and second round. Williams looks like he could go all night.

In the twelfth and final round Williams unleashes with a barrage of punches; by Compubox numbers Williams has thrown over 1000 punches in this fight. Williams is on his toes throwing and landing combinations, Winky stands in front of him flat footed. A big left hand staggers Winky. Williams doesn’t slow until the final bell.

The fight goes to the score cards: 119-109 twice and 120-108 for the winner Paul Williams who improves his record to 37-1 with 28 KO’s. Winky Wright falls to 51-5.
