Gamboa Stops Rojas In the Tenth

gamb3Photo by Tom Casino/Showtime – By Sam Gregory: The April 17th edition of ShoBox at Buffalo Bills Casino at Primm, Nevada features in the main event the 2004 Olympic Gold Medalist, 2009 Prospect of the year and WBA #3 contender Yuriorkis Gamboa, 14-0 (12), from Cuba residing in Miami who will take on #2 ranked Jose “Cheo” Rojas, 25-6-1 (17) of Caracas, Venezuela for the interim WBA featherweight title.

The first round started out a feeling out round than the shorter Gamboa soon stepped in landing his jab. Rojas was backed against the ropes; Gamboa landed a couple good jabs.

In the second round Gamboa threw combinations and landed an over hand right. Rojas was on the defense most of the round; Gamboa kept pushing Rojas back landing a couple good shots.

In the third round Gamboa came out throwing the jab. Rojas still hasn’t thrown much. Rojas spins out of the corner and lands an over hand right. Gamboa is controlling the round pushing Rojas back. Rojas throws too little too late in the round.

At the start of the fourth round Rojas has a bubble above right eye due to a punch. Gamboa throws the jab and lands with a straight right hand. Gamboa lands a solid right cross; he’s timing his punches and controlling the fight at this point.

In the fifth round Rojas tries to push forward; Gamboa spins and catches Rojas who goes down; Gamboa scores a knockdown. Right hand by Gamboa lands flush. Rojas taking a lot of head shots and isn’t punching.

In the sixth round Gamboa lands with his jab and catches Rojas with a solid right hand. Rojas lands a nice left hand; Gamboa tied up.

In the seventh Gamboa lands with his jab than lands an over hand right. Gamboa poking the jab in Rojas’ face than lands the right. Rojas throws some sloppy combinations; now has blood coming from around the right eye.

In the eighth Gamboa shoots his jab and lands the right hand off the jab. Rojas is spending most of the round avoiding Gamboa’s punches and not throwing much of anything himself.

In the ninth Rojas’ eye looking worse; he spins and avoids Gamboa’s punches. Gamboa keeps shooting the jab, walking Rojas down. Gamboa lands 2 solid right hands to Rojas’ head.

Between rounds the doctor looks at Rojas eye.

In the ten Gamboa is clearly ahead; it doesn’t look like Rojas can see too good out of his injured eye. Rojas is still throwing punches but isn’t landing anything. The referee comes in and stops the fight. Rojas was never really in the fight. fight is stopped at 1:31 of the tenth round; Gamboa wins by TKO.

Gamboa improves to 15-0 with 13 KO’s. Rojas falls to 25-7 with 17 KO’s.
