Liam Walsh: I know I can beat Ricky Burns

By Scott Gilfoid: #13 WBO contender Liam Walsh (13-0, 10 KO’s) is the latest overmatched opponent picked out to face WBO lightweight champion Ricky Burns (35-2, 10 KO’s) on December 15th at the ExCel Arena, Dockland, London, United Kingdom. Walsh, 26, is being given no chance of winning this fight, and having seen Walsh fight six or seven times in the past, I’m not going to disagree with that.

Walsh looks like a nice bottom dweller, and certainly not someone that should be fighting for a title at this point. But it’s not surprising he’s being given a shot because he’s a Brit, the fight is taking place in Britain, he stands little chance of winning, and he’s recognizable with the British fans.

The interesting part here is that Walsh thinks he can really win this fight, and doesn’t seem to realize yet that he has no chance in this fight. Too bad. He’ll figure it out after two or three rounds on December 15th.

Walsh said to thesun.co.uk “Ricky’s a great champion, but after studying him throughout his career, I know I’ve got the tools to beat him.”

Burns a great champion? No, I have to fully disagree with Walsh right there. A great champion is one that has defended a title many times and beaten big names. I think I may be missing something here but I don’t see any big names on Burn’s resume, not one. Since he was given the WBO lightweight title out of the ring by the World Boxing Organization, Burns has beaten the following fighters: Paulus Moses and Kevin Mitchell. Burns beat Michael Katsidis while Burns was the WBO interim lightweight champion, so that victory doesn’t count. However, even it did it’s still not a win big deal. My point is Burns is not a great champion because beating Mitchell, Moses or even Katsidis is nothing. There’s no greatness there.

Walsh isn’t going to win this fight. Walsh is lucky he didn’t get knocked out in the 1st round in his last fight against Domenico Urbano last July, because Urbano staggered Walsh with a big left hook to the head. Urbano didn’t realize that Walsh was hurt ans just let him off the hook.
