Image: Pacquiao-Marquez 4: Six weeks to go and little buzz surrounding this fightBy Chris Williams: With only six weeks to go before the Manny Pacquiao (54-4-2, 38 KO’s) vs. Juan Manuel Marquez (54-6-1, 39 KO’s) fourth fight there’s almost zero interest for this fight from the boxing public compared to the three previous times this match-up has taken place. It’s as if the boxing public has grown bored seeing Bob Arum put them together again over and over and over again without letting other fighters get their chance.

It reminds me of how movies get remade repeatedly until they stop making money. We see Home Alone I, Home Alone II, Rocky I, Rocky 2, Rocky 3, Rocky 4, and Rocky Balboa. Bob Arum has done the same with the Pacquiao-Marquez fight, and I think the boxing public if officially sick of seeing this fight take place.

Both fighters have a lot of money on these fights, as has Arum, but there reaches a point of diminishing returns and I think that’s going to happen on December 8th. The problem Arum has is he tends to want to put Pacquiao in with his own Top Rank stable fighters and he simply doesn’t have a lot of options anymore. There’s Tim Bradley and Brandon Rios, and guess who’ll be next after Pacquiao fights Marquez? You guessed it, Rios. After him, it’ll be Rios, and after him probably Bradley. It’s so predictable and sad. I don’t know why Arum won’t bring in some new blood and take some chances.

Arum is counting on the Mexican public to want to purchase the December 8th Pacquiao-Marquez fight in high numbers to try and boost Pacquiao’s sagging PPV numbers from his last fight against fellow Top Rank fighter Bradley, but I don’t know how many times Arum can sell the same fight to the Mexican community, especially when Marquez isn’t being given the wins that many people feel like he rightfully deserves.

It’s like paying $50 to see a rerun of a movie where you know it’s going to have a terrible ending that will leave you angry, depressed and feeling stupid for having paid all that money to see it in the first place. I don’t know that the Mexican fans will be willing to buy this fight this time. I expect Pacquiao’s loyal Filipino fans to purchase it now matter how many times Arum shovels this save fight to his fans, but I think that’s a special case because they adore Pacquiao to no end and he’s being given the wins each time despite fighting poorly.
