By Allan Fox: Floyd Mayweather Jr. weighed in this week at 160 pounds in his retirement. Mayweather is staying active since he stopped fighting after beating Andre Berto in September 2015. Mayweather weighed in while working out in Las Vegas, Nevada.
The 160lbs that Mayweather weighed in has some boxing fans wondering whether he would be willing to return to the ring to fight middleweight champion Gennady “GGG” Golovkin in a huge mega-fight. Mayweather has already beaten Golden Boy Promotions star Saul Canelo Alvarez in 2013 in winning a 12 round decision.
There’s no point in Mayweather and Canelo fighting again. The only real fights for Mayweather would be against Golovkin or Manny Pacquiao. A second fight between Mayweather and Pacquiao might not do well on pay-per-view though, because many boxing fans are still angry at the non-effort from both fighters in their fight in May of 2015.
With prices for the fight over $100 for PPV, Pacquiao and Mayweather fought with little energy in going the full 12 round distance. Neither guy looked motivated to get their hands dirty. Mayweather looked like he was just coasting in many of the rounds. His father/trainer Floyd Mayweather Sr. had to motivate Mayweather to fight hard after the 4th, because he was not putting out effort.
Getting Mayweather to fight Golovkin would appear to be next to impossible no matter how much money was involved. Golovkin already volunteered to come down to 154 to fight Mayweather. It’s not as if he would have to come all the way up to 160 to fight the Kazakhstan fighter.
Mayweather has shown no interest in fighting GGG though. Instead, Mayweather has focused more on fighting MMA star Conor McGregor in a boxing match. It’s not going to happen though.
McGregor is under contract with the UKF and they’re not going to let their star get beaten up in a boxing match by Mayweather. The fight might do well on PPV due to McGregor being so popular in the MMA world. However, it would likely foul up the future PPV fights in the sport.
No matter what price the fight went for on PPV, boxing fans would be angry if it turned out to be a mismatch. The fans are already being asked to pay for a mismatch on PPV involving Miguel Cotto and James Kirkland on February 25 on HBO. That’s a terrible fight in the eyes of a lot of fans.
Mayweather has recommended that Golovkin move up two divisions to fight Andre Ward at light heavyweight. Golovkin isn’t going to do that. With Ward talking retirement, it’s pointless to for Golovkin to bother trying to get a fight against him. Ward is sounding like he’s not going to be in the sport for too much longer.
It’s good that Mayweather is at least staying in shape while he’s retired. A lot of fighters let themselves go, and wind up looking like a blimp. At least if Mayweather does one day decide that he misses boxing, he can come back without too much problems in taking weight off to get back into the ring.
