garcia68By Dan Ambrose: The World Boxing Council has extended negotiations between WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (29-0, 17 KOs) and his #1 WBC mandatory challenger Viktor Postol (29-0, 17 KOs) until October 10th. If an agreement isn’t reached by that time a purse bid will take place on October 10th.

Postol could potentially be the most formidable opponent that Garcia has faced during his career due to his 5’11” height, long reach, excellent chin and high work rate. Garcia was very lucky to win a controversial decision over Mauricio Herrera last March in Puerto Rico, but he’ll have to find another way to beat Postol because this fight.

He’s a much different fighter who Herrera, who many boxing fans saw Garcia losing to. Garcia was beaten to the punch all night long against Herrera but he was still given the win. In Garcia’s victory over Lucas Matthysse, he clinched, moved, jabbed and low-blowed him all night long.

Garcia was also given credit for a knockout where he shoved Matthysse into the ropes and then drilled him with shots when he got tangled on the ropes. With Postol, he’s got the work rate and size to ruin Garcia’s dreams of fights against Pacquiao and Mayweather. Garcia might still get those fights, but a loss to Postol will definitely delay the fights from happening.

Garcia hasn’t vacated his WBC title yet, so it looks like he plans on staying at 140 for a little while longer to defend his WBC strap. Garcia had been talking about moving up in weight to the welterweight division to go after the top dogs in that weight class like Floyd Mayweather Jr, Kell Brook and Keith Thurman. But it looks like Garcia is having second thoughts about it or perhaps a failure to launch.

In moving up in weight many of Garcia’s biggest assets – his weight and power advantages – are much less pronounced. In the light welterweight division, Garcia is bigger than a lot of the guys he faces in this class, but his advantage go away entirely once he moves up in weight.

It’s kind of scary to think what a fighter like Floyd Mayweather Jr or Keith Thurman will do to Garcia when/if he moves up in weight. When Garcia does eventually move up in weight, he’s likely going to go for the cash immediately by taking on either Mayweather or Manny Pacquiao rather than taking a risky fight against the likes of Thurman.
