Fury places tape over mouth for Chisora press conference

fury6By Scott Gilfoid: In what has to be seen as a protest against the British Boxing Board of Control for their stiff £15,000 fine handed out to Tyson Fury (22-0, 16 KOs) for the trash talking he did in the past in another press conference with Chisora, Fury decided to tape his mouth and not speak for today’s press conference.

It was kind of a senseless move on Fury’s part because by not speaking, he’s shooting himself in the foot by not helping to get boxing fans interested in his November 22nd rematch with Chisora at the ExCel Arena in London, UK.

It obviously was a bummer for Fury to get fined all that cash by the British Boxing Board, but Fury’s knee-jerk reaction to tape his own mouth is only hurting himself and not the Board.

To me, it comes across as a childish move on Fury’s part because the British Boxing Board members were merely doing their job when they fined Fury for using expletives during a past press conference. Instead of taking his mouth, Fury should be showing some maturity by taking responsibility for what he did in the past, and own up to what he did.

You’ve got to feel for Chisora if Fury chooses to stay mum for the entire series of press conferences for their November 22nd fight. That obviously isn’t going to help ticket sales any, and it’s going to put the entire promotional load on Chisora to try and get boxing fans interested in the fight.

Chisora won’t be able to do it singlehandedly, not with Fury standing there with a big piece tape of his mouth the entire time. If Chisora was a standup comic, he could come to the press conferences with 15 minutes of jokes on the issue, but he’s not going to be able to do much with Fury not speaking.

The Fury-Chisora 2 fight will be a WBO heavyweight eliminator bout. The winner becomes the mandatory challenger to IBF/IBO/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko. The loser will likely find himself as fodder for Anthony Joshua in the near future.

“The Board wanted us to tone it down so here’s Tyson – the Board dummy,” said trainer Peter Fury.
