Robert Guerrero a possible opponent for Amir Khan on May 3rd

guerrero53By Scott Gilfoid: The inactive former two division world champion Robert “The Ghost” Guerrero (31-2-1, 18 KO’s) is a possible opponent for Amir Khan’s next fight on May 3rd, according to Fighthype. Guerrero-Khan, if the fight is made, it could end up being the co-feature bout on the Floyd Mayweather Jr. vs. Marcos Maidana card at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada. Adrien Broner’s fight would then be moved to the third fight below the main event. This obviously would mean that Broner is likely to face John Molina or another weak opponent that few fight fans would be interested in seeing.

Guerrero was recently looking to have his contract with Golden Boy Promotions voided. That’s something that could get in the way of a Khan-Guerrero fight from taking place, but the fight still is a good possibility. Guerrero can’t just sit and stay inactive forever, and Khan is someone that he’d have a good chance of whipping if the fight can get made. It’s a win-win fight for Guerrero. He hasn’t fought since last year when Mayweather Jr. schooled him in beating him by a 12 round decision. It’s already been 10 months since the 30-year-old Guerrero last fought, and it wouldn’t be good for him to waste his career sitting idle.

For Guerrero to get the big money fights, he’s going to need to beat someone like Khan to get in position. I don’t see Guerrero ever getting another fight against Mayweather, though, due to their bout being too one-sided. But Guerrero can still do well if he beats Khan, and takes on the IBF champion Shawn Porter to pick up that title.

Luis Collazo was recently mentioned as one of the candidates for Khan’s fight in May, and he continues to be a possibility. But Guerrero is a much more interesting fight because of his recent bout against Mayweather. It would give fans a chance to see how Khan did against a common opponent that Mayweather recently fought. If Khan can easily beat Guerrero, which I highly doubt, it would raise his stock and increase the chances for a Mayweather fight. I still think a Khan-Broner fight would be the best fight for Khan, but it doesn’t look like Golden Boy Promotions is going to make that fight. Whether it’s them that are blocking the fight for Broner’s adviser Al Haymon is unclear. Heck, it might even be Broner who doesn’t want the fight. Whatever the case, Broner isn’t in the equation for Khan’s next fight.
