I am a fan of both WBA/WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (26-0, 16 KO’s) and Lucas Matthysse (34-2, 32 KO’s) but this is about one thing who will walk away with the WBA & WBC belts in their fight at the MGM Grand in Las Vegas, Nevada on September 14th? In Danny Garcia’s last fight we saw him struggle against, lets face it, a past it Zab Judah. We saw Danny get exposed by the veteran Zab.
Danny is flat footed and he has little boxing ability. When he gets in trouble, he panics and just throws big left and right hooks, and he runs out of ideas. He does not have the boxing ability or brain to box on the back foot or work his opponent out and adapt to the fight, but he does have one punch knockout power in both hands as he has demonstrated throughout his career. That’s enough to win any fight. Now on to Lucas.
Lucas Matthysse fought the durable Lamont Peterson in his last fight in May. Lamont is a decent fighter as you all know, and Lucas completely destroyed him in the 3rd round. Lamont has a proven chin and proven record that he his a good fighter and still relevant to the Light Welterweight Division. The only thing I will say is that Lucas struggled with the height of Lamont.
Lucas fought Zab three years ago, and I had Matthysse winning it. Matthysse has got highly underrated boxing skills. If you don’t believe me, go watch the Zab fight. Matthysse has heavy heavy hands, and both hand are just loaded with power. Just look at all his fights. He is a well rounded fighter that is good in all aspects of boxing.
I really see Lucas taking this fight. He can beat Danny in every way. This fight may go Lucas, as he can box on the back foot, and definitely has the boxing IQ to set Danny up for the taking. Matthysse also has the heavy hands and boxing ability to take the fight to Danny and bang with him if need be.
I think people are looking past Lucas because all he does is KO people, but he’s got such an underrated boxing ability. I think Lucas will win by KO in the 6th round. If Danny can rock Matthysse at some point in the fight, then I see it being more interesting, but I can’t see it happening.
