Image: Khan: I'm a superstar in the sportBy Andy Puller: Well dressed and wearing designer sunglasses, WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (26-2, 18 KO’s) looked like celebrity at the final press conference with WBC light welterweight champion Danny Garcia (23-0, 14 KO’s). Khan didn’t look like a fighter who was coming off a 12 round decision defeat against Lamont Peterson where Khan was exposed as having no plan B.

Khan said this in an interview with Sky Ringside “I’m a superstar in the sport. When I hear all the younger fighters calling me out, I ignore them.”

Khan is only 25, but by the sound of that statement you would think he’s in his early 30s.

It’s nice for a fighter to have a short memory for after they lose, because confidence if a crucial aspect in moving forward after defeats. However, too much confidence is a killer because fighters that overestimate their own ability don’t go very far.

Khan’s ego might be a little out of touch with reality right now given his knockout loss to Breidis Prescott and his very poor showing in the Peterson fight. Khan seems to have grasped onto the Peterson testing positive for synthetic testosterone as an excuse for why he didn’t look good against him. I think is a mistake. Even if Peterson didn’t take any performance enhancing drugs, I believe he would have still given Khan fits, because of Khan’s lack of an inside game and predictable fighting style. Khan fought the same way the entire fight against Peterson, and it made it easy for him to come up with a plan to beat him. Khan’s quick combinations, running and fouling were something that Peterson figured out how to beat by the 4th round. Khan couldn’t adjust and stuck with the same routine for the rest of the fight. That’s not a sign of a superstar. Khan might do a good job of aping a superstar by wearing nice clothes, sunglasses and saying the bold things that a superstar says, but he seems to be posing. He’s not the real thing.
