Image: Broner not getting much credit for whipping EscobedoBy Scott Gilfoid: A day after his marvelous performance in in whipping Vincente Escobedo (26-4, 15 KO’s) by a 5th round TKO victory last night, Adrien Broner (24-0, 20 KO’s) is not getting the accolades from the boxing fans that he should be getting for such an impressive one-sided beating.

After all, it wasn’t as if Broner beat a scrub last night in 30-year-old Escobedo. The guy is ranked #1 by the World Boxing Organization just as the 22-year-old Broner’s last victim Eloy Perez was ranked #1 by the WBO and could only last four measly rounds against the talented Broner.

So why are boxing fans not lapping Broner’s backside? Well, I have a few ideas and I think I’m dead right on some if not all of them.

1. Jealousy – I think some boxing fans are just plain jealous of this incredible talent and don’t want to give the man his dues because it’s not them making mincemeat of one opponent after another.

2. Broner failing to make weight – Not making weight on Friday and then Saturday’s weigh-ins rubbed some boxing fans the wrong way, especially the fans that were predisposed to dislike Broner to begin with. This gave some boxing fans a further excuse to hate on Broner. Additionally, they can’t give Broner credit for his victory over Escobedo because they believe he out-weighed Escobedo by a substantial amount. Here’s the reality of the situation: Broner only outweighed Escobedo by five pounds when they entered the ring, and that’s no weight advantage. Broner weighed 147, while Escobedo came in at 142. So the weight was a non factor for this fight.

3. Fans not understanding why Broner made it look so easy in beating Escobedo – fans got the wrong impression when seeing Broner toy with Escobedo, and assumed that he may have been facing a lesser fighter. However, Escobedo was ranked #1 by the WBO and this as good as it gets. You can’t expect Broner to face better than the #1 spot when there is no one better than that. Broner fought the best guy available and made it look so easy because of his T-A-L-E-N-T.
