Image: Salido wants Jhonny Gonzalez on 7/21; Broner, Russell Jr. and Caballero are backup plansBy Dan Ambrose: WBO featherweight champion Orlando Salido told the Record.com.mx that he wants to fight a unification bout against WBC featherweight champion Jhonny Gonzalez (51-7m 45 KO’s) on July 21st, if Gonzalez is interested in taking the fight and if he can get past his April 28th opponent Elio Rojas (23-1, 14 KO’s) in Cancun, Mexico.

If Gonzalez, 30, doesn’t want to take the fight with Salido, then he says his back up plan is to take on one of the following fighters: Andrien Broner, Gary Russell Jr. or Celestino Caballero next.

I’d say the chances are pretty good that Salido gets the fight against Gonzalez. If he doesn’t get fight then his best bet is to get another unification bout against Caballer, the WBA featherweight champion. Broner, the WBO super featherweight champion, likely won’t be given permission to fight Salido by his promoters at Golden Boy. They likely won’t want to take the risk of putting Broner in with a seasoned fighter like Salido because of all of his experience, power and especially due to his great chin and nonstop punching style.

Salido would be a real problem for Broner because he probably wouldn’t be bothered by Broner’s hard pot shots. He’d walk through those punches and would be landing a lot of big punches that Broner has yet to feel. He’s been virtually untouched in most of his fights because his opponents get obliterated so fast due to his power. But Salido wouldn’t get mowed down and he’d really give to Broner and then some. Russell Jr. also probably won’t be given permission to fight Salido because he’s even more vulnerable than Broner because of his lack of head movement and power.
