The date that Arum is listing for the fight tells you all you need to know about whether Pacquiao will be fighting Floyd Mayweather Jr. He obviously won’t be and it’s also clear that Miguel Cotto is likely to be the one that gets selected by Arum.

Arum told philstar.com “We are going to make the announcement this week regarding Manny Pacquiao’s June 9 fight. We have to formalize everything before we make the announcement.”

As for Mayweather, he will have to wait until November to try and get a fight with Pacquiao, although I seriously doubt the fight will get made at that time as well. If Pacquiao makes good money in the Cotto fight in June, we could see Arum go back to that fight to try and get another easy money fight for Pacquiao while at the same time keeping Cotto happy.

Arum needs to keep Cotto happy so he won’t stray away from Top Rank and sign with Golden Boy Promotions. The way I see it, as long as Pacquiao is making good money against Arum’s Top Rank stable fighters, Mayweather isn’t needed.

To be sure, you’ll keep hearing a lot of name dropping from team Pacquiao with them mentioning the Mayweather fight to keep attention high in the media but then Pacquiao will likely fight another one of Arum’s guys. Coming events cast their shadows before. We’ll likely see Arum continuing with matching Pacquiao up with his guys while Mayweather is past over again come November.
