Dibella thinks Mayweather would trounce Pacquiao

By Eric Thomas: In the latest boxing news, promoter Lou Dibella believes Floyd Mayweather Jr. would easily beat WBO welterweight champion Manny Pacquiao if they can put together a fight in 2012. Dibella doesn’t see it as a competitive fight, however, as he believes Mayweather would methodically take Pacquiao apart with his accurate shots and make easy work of him.

I can see what Dibella is talking about, because Mayweather showed in his last fight against southpaw Victor Ortiz that he’s just too deadly accurate with his punches, and that was against a fighter that is both bigger and stronger than Pacquiao. Ortiz had a size and strength advantage over Mayweather as well, yet he couldn’t land and his power was useless to him.

Ortiz has about the same hand speed as Pacquiao, but he just couldn’t land any of his shots. Mayweather’s defense was practically impregnable, leaving Ortiz hitting air all night long until he head-butted Mayweather in the 4th round in what appeared to be an act of frustration on his part.

Pacquiao is much wilder with his shots than Ortiz, and he would probably try to overwhelm Mayweather with punches. Of course, it wouldn’t work because Mayweather would tag with counter shots each time Pacquiao would throw one of his big punches. With Pacquiao being smaller at only 5’6”, he would eventually start getting beaten up. Pacquiao isn’t used to getting hit a lot, because he’s faced a lot of guys that were either old or coming off of recent losses where they took a beating.

Against Mayweather, Pacquiao would take a ton of punishment and it would be bad for him. There’s very little that Pacquiao’s trainer Freddie Roach could come up with that would help Pacquiao deal with Mayweather’s talent advantage. He’s probably just too good for Pacquiao to beat unless Mayweather gets old all of a sudden.
