Haye should fight Arreola for a tune-up, but probably won’t

By Sean McDaniel: If former WBA heavyweight champion David Haye (25-2, 23 KO’s) wanted to assure himself a rematch with IBF/WBA/WBO heavyweight champion Wladimir Klitschko (56-3, 49 KO’s), he’d take on heavyweight contender Chris Arreola (33-2, 28 KO’s) in a tune-up fight to get some badly needed positive press and some training.

Arreola has been mentioned as a possible opponent for Wladimir to face in December, but he’s unlikely to get selected. Instead, Wladimir will look to face either Dereck Chisora or Tyson Fury next. That leaves Arreola for Haye to fight in the U.S. to add a scalp to his resume.

Haye doesn’t have a lot of risk in facing Arreola because he recently fought Friday Ahunanya and looked horrible in winning a sloppy 10 round decision on July 9th. Arreola was slow, weak looking and easily hit by Ahunanya. By the 6th, Ahunanya was connecting regularly with hard shots and had Arreola’s left eye puffed up. This would be an easy fight for Haye, because Arreola is just too slow on his feet to beat a good mover like Haye.

If Tomasz Adamek was able to box circles around Arreola then Haye will make it even easier. He’s just a much better fighter. What Haye shouldn’t do is face World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko next, because he’s far too big and dangerous for a small heavyweight like Haye. Vitali wouldn’t be bothered by Haye’s pot shots and would end up wearing Haye down with his big clubbing punches until stopping him at some point.
