Khan’s arms look too heavily muscled for Judah bout

By William Mackay: WBA light welterweight champion Amir Khan (25-1, 17 KO’s) looks to have overdid it a little bit with strength trainer Alex Ariza during training camp for Khan’s July 23rd bout against International Boxing Federation (IBF) Zab Judah. If you watch Khan work out for this fight, Khan’s arms look like they’re a lot more muscular for this fight than they were for his past fights.

That’s a credit to Ariza’s strength training no doubt. However, it’s actually not much of a credit because Khan looks slower with the extra arm muscle and not as fast as he was in the past. Unless this fight ends quickly with Khan knocking Judah out early there could be a real danger of Khan punching himself out and slowing down if he throws a lot of shots.

Judah is training the right way by working on speed rather than putting on useless muscles. Judah looks to be gliding effortlessly as he moves around the ring with his trainer Pernell Whitaker. I think Judah has the advantage by not packing on muscle that he can’t use. In the case of Khan, I think he’s over-did for this fight with adding too much muscle.

Khan looks like a junior middleweight right now with all the muscle he’s packed on. I’m sure he’ll lose dehydrate to make weight before the fight and then rehydrate after the weigh-in, but I believe Khan will be slow from the extra weight. Judah may be too fast for him in this fight. At any rate, it will be a good lesson for Khan and he can at least have a good excuse to make afterwards.
