Klitschko-Solis: Odlanier has the speed to make Vitali look like an old man

By Dave Lahr: Unbeaten heavyweight contender Odlanier Solis (17-0, 12 KO’s) is facing the older and much slower of the Klitschko brothers in his March 19th fight against World Boxing Council (WBC) heavyweight champion Vitali Klitschko (41-2, 38 KO’s) in their fight at the Lanxes-Arena, in Cologne, in Germany. Vitali,6’7 1/2″, is slow and fights as if he’s on a pair of rickety stilts. If there was ever an opponent that was just perfect for the quick-fisted Solis, it’s Vitali.

The big Ukrainian is very slow and is wide open to right hands as we saw in Vitali’s win over Kevin Johnson in December 2009. The problem Johnson had in that fight is that he wasn’t throwing enough right hands to win the fight. However, he did a great job of badly marking up Vitali’s eyes by the time the fight was over. After the fight, Vitali looked like he had been run over by truck, because both of his eyes were blackened by Johnson’s jabs and right hands.

Solis is a much bigger puncher and is a lot faster than Johnson, so way will likely see Vitali get hit with a lot of right hands in this fight. Solis is one of the best heavyweights that have come out of the amateur ranks in quite some time. Solis captured a Gold Medal in the 2004 Olympics for Cuba, and has looked excellent during his four year pro career. In fact, Solis has looked so good that few of his opponents have been able to go the distance with him because of his quick hands and superb counter punching ability. Vitali is the perfect guy for Solis to land his counter shots against because of Vitali’s slow hands and his tendency to stick his arms out and leave them hanging uselessly in between punches.
