Image: Time for war: Froch vs. Abraham and Marquez vs. KatsidisBy Dallan o’ Donnell: Tonight boxing fans could potentially be in for the fight night of the year. Two fights that both could easily bag fight of the year if all goes according to script. The first comes from Helsinki, Finland which sees former WBC super middleweight champion Carl Froch (26-1, 20 KO’s) take on Armenian powerhouse and former IBF middleweight champion Arthur Abraham (31-1, 25 KO’s) in the semi-finals of the Super six series. Both men are coming off defeats to Mikkel Kessler and Andre Dirrell respectively. Froch known for his attacking style and die hard attitude will be surely looking to box his way to victory tonight as it would take a mad man to stand up and trade with Abraham who stepped up from middleweight taking all his power with him, he is a naturally heavy handed fighter.

Froch has not once in his career held his hands up for an entire fight. He loves to brawl and give fans value for money every time he steps into the ring he attacks round by round but can take shots whilst coming back with his own. Abraham is a very slow fighter, Froch has been quoted saying at the press conference this week that: He (Abraham) doesn’t start until the sixth and tires in the eighth. Froch also believes he has superior fitness but is the elder man by 3 years. Abraham countered Froch by saying he will start right from the opening bell, if he does so we could be in for a treat. Froch always has his legion of British fans with him for fights and although he is no Ricky Hatton of British boxing we cannot lay the blame with him. His fights are not shown on what would be regarded as the bigger broadcasters in the UK and is a very under-rated fighter.

I expect a slow opening to this fight but it should start to kick off in the fourth and you can expect nothing less than fireworks from there on in. The second fight of the night comes from the MGM Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada where the WBO and WBA lightweight titles will be on the line. The current champion, a Mexican ring legend in Juan Manuel Marquez (51-5-1, 37 KO’s) takes on Aussie challenger Michael Katsidis (27-2, 22 KO’s). Golden boy promotions have dubbed this “Warriors” and i cannot think of a better name. Both men leave nothing at home and come into the ring all guns blazing. Katsidis has been spurred on by the sudden and tragic death of his brother Stathi.

A win for Michael would be the perfect tribute for his late brother. Although both have been in wars before it is a clash of styles. Marquez with quick hands is a known counter puncher whilst Katsidis is an all out brawler who finally gets his shot at this lightweight title having been the interim champion after his victory over previously undefeated Kevin Mitchell. Marquez has had a disappointing loss to Floyd Mayweather JR but we cannot read too much into a non title fight fought at welterweight. He has since beat Juan Diaz with a unanimous decision. We can all expect big things from tonight’s fights as im sure they will not let us down for action.
