News – Mayweather to face Cintron next?

By Eric Thomas: According to Michael Marley from the Examiner, Floyd Mayweather Jr. could be facing former International Boxing Federation welterweight champion Kermit Cintron (32-2-1, 28 KO’s) next on March 13th. If this turns out to be the case, this would be a huge departure from the past for the 32-year-old Mayweather, who lately has preferred to fight smaller opponents. At 5’11”, Cintron is three inches taller than Mayweather and has a two inch reach advantage as well.
I see this as a better fight than the Pacquiao-Clottey bout, because at least Cintron can punch and wouldn’t just be a sitting duck covering up on the ropes all night long like Clottey. Ideally, Mayweather should wait for the Andre Berto vs. Shane Mosley winner to get free and then take that fight. But if Mayweather is determined to fight on March 13th, then Cintron is a good choice. He’s ranked #2 in the WBC, #2 WBO and #3 in the IBF light middleweight division. Cintron has been stopped twice by Antonio Margarito, most recently in April 2008. In February 2009, Cintron fought to a controversial 12 round majority draw with Sergio Martinez in a fight that Cintron appeared to have been stopped.
I’d rate Cintron as a better opponent than two of Mayweather’s other potential opponents for March, Nate Campbell and Paulie Malignaggi. Cintron is much bigger and stronger than those two, and he punches like a mule. Cintron may not have Mayweather’s blazing hand speed, but if he can catch Mayweather with a big shot, Cintron can end the fight at a moments notice. He not only hits hard, but he’s much improved in terms of boxing skills. Cintron recently defeated top light middleweight prospect Alfredo Angulo, out-boxing Angulo over 12 rounds last year in May. It was a great performance from Cintron, who boxed at times and threw heavy leather at others. Although Cintron has been fighting as a light middleweight recently, he seems more at home as welterweight.
Cintron appears to be the much bigger puncher than Clottey with either hand. Clottey punches well with his left hand, but his right is weak and he has only one knockout in the past five years. That doesn’t say much for Clottey’s power. Clottey’s last knockout was against a fighter by the name of Jose Luis Cruz in 2008. His next knockout win before that was way back in 2004 against a fighter by the name of Christopher Henry.

Really! I thought Floyd is smart. He avoided to fight a smaller opponent that could make him more money and now Cintron? a bigger,way bigger fighter, and definitely a smaller payday.

It’s got nothing to do with Mayweathers boxing ability or skills. You have probably seen a lot of things being said against Mayweather this is simply Pacquiao fans and Floyd haters trying to hide from the truth.
They are failing to understand how Pacqiao could walk away from possibly the biggest fight in history all because he is scared of a simple blood test.
Most people are like sheep…they are mere followers who do not have minds of their own. The point people keep making about Floyd fighting smaller fighters is ridiculous just like the claims that he hasn’t fought anyone.
Hatton fought Floyd and lost to Floyd first..ye Floyd’s critics say Hatton was overrated. Those same critics consider Manny’s 2nd round destruction of Hatton as a great accomplishment? So Manny was great for winning but with Floyd Hatton was overrated. Somebody explain that.
DLH at 154 for 8 years Floyd moves up to 154 (never fought there before), wins and people say DLH was over the hill….Pac fights DLH and beats him to a pulp and it’s a great accomplishment…wasn’t DLH over the hill against Floyd? Mayweather doesn’t fight in Texas, Pac does… So nobody has to travel to texas to see Floyd fight. He will never fight in Texas or most other states otherwise Floyd can’t use his hand numming injections, because they are banned.
But Blueblood has a solid point… I’ve seen 7 or 8 names coming by as possible opponent for Floyd, I’ve yet to see him sign one. And believe me… the guy who will eventually fight Floyd will be smaller and having a less than 60% KO rate.
On second thought, given the major tragedy in Haiti and how it might affect Berto’s focus…I think he should simply step aside, so Da Floyd can face Mosley. January 15, exactly 57 days before March 13, or 8 weeks before fight day. Or exactly 7-training weeks—not counting the week leading to March 13 and Floyd has not yet decided whom to fight. Still speculations.
I bet Schaefer and Haymon are having a hard time convincing Floyd to fight someone bigger than him, a true welterweight or heavier.
Cintron is better known than Clottey and a dangerous puncher. This would be a much better fight than the other fight on that same day.
HBO is tired of Bon Arum, All Floyd has to do is fight someone dangerous and HBO will back him. 24/7 with Floyd is 1000 times better than with Pacman.

To all those doubting that Floyd will fight Cintron, I see where you’re coming from. I just feel that Mayweather is backed into a corner right now when it comes to choosing his next opponent. The whole boxing world is watching and waiting to see who he’s going to fight. He can’t pick Malinaggi, Campbell, or Hatton! If he does the fight won’t sell and his reputation takes a brutal hit. These three are smaller guys that are nowhere near the P4P top ten! Bradley is a much better choice, he too is smaller and has ties with Showtime. Floyd has to choose between Cintron, Martinez, and Williams. Out of those I believe he will go with Cintron. If he chooses one of the small guys, his reputation is going to take a major hit and Pac-Clottey will out-sell his fight!

I have a question. I’m a baseball fan. In Baseball and all the other sports in the world recognize the Steriods, HGH and EPO problem in sports. What is wrong with blood testing in boxing. Why is it a bad thing for every fighter to be randomly tested for PED’S. Can someone please answer this question for me.
Not a Mayweather fan, but if he fights Cintron, I have to give him credit for a good selection. Floyd should win, but at least the possibility exists that he could be KO’d. There is some suspense to this fight, the other possible opponents (Malinaggi & Campbell) had virtually no shot at beating Floyd and both are smaller. I like this fight better than Pac/Clottey; Cintron’s size and power and how Floyd is going to handle it is what appeals to me.

This would be a good move for Floyd. Cintron is a really good welterweight that is floyd size and could give him problems. But when he dominates this fight, there will just be some other excuse for why he should have won.

Li’l Floyd found someone to fight on March 13. He wants Hawaiian Punch Brian Viloria’s IBF Junior Flyweight belt. But Li’l Floyd had demanded again random blood test and Viloria must weight 147. TO his amazed, Viloria accepted the fight so he’s thinking of ducking him again.. LOL..
How can anyone count the Margarito loss against Cintron? All Margaritos wins are suspect the minute he was caught with loaded wraps. The Martinez bout was at 154 lbs, meaning Cintron had to go up in weight. You have to give Mayweather some credit if he takes on Cintron. I don’t see it happening though given Mayweather’s history.
I am not a big fan of Cintron but this a better choice than the others that have been floating around. I personally think that Mayweather should fight either Sergio Martinez or Paul Williams. After that great show they put last December I think they both deserve a big payday with Mayweather. That fight is still in peoples minds and it would bring a lot of attention to the to the boxing world. Both are defenitely a threat to Mayweather with their styles and if Mayweather beats either one he would defenitely get more credit for fighting the best. If Mayweather is as great and smart as he says he is this is a way to get a great payday and get some street credit. just wishful thinking.

martinez is a tune up for nobody. the dude is a legit threat for any middleweight let alone a welter moving up. cintron has just as good of a resume as clottey and is more offensive minded. cintron doesn’t have a history of hand problems and has more pop than most welters.
I had a look at the possible opponents for Mayweather in a March bout. But, although the Welterweight division is full of talent, there are not many opponents that will satisfy Mayweather’s critics. Cintron seems like a good choice to me, other than that there is only Quintana and Collazo, possibly Bradley. No doubt if he gets in with Bradley though, his critics will have a field day.
I want to see Floyd Mayweather face Matthew Hatton, then (father) Ray Hatton, to complete a famous trilogy over the Hatton family and to cement his legacy.
Martinez is a much better and skillful opponent. In many people’s eyes he beat both Cintron and Williams plus he’s the perfect tune up for either Pacquiao, Moseley or Berto as he’s got comparible speed. Floyd should fight Martinez – much more street cred and will be a better fight to watch. Cintron looses steam towards the end of his fights. Martinez is hugely underrated.

Look at knockout ratios. Cintron has a lot more power than Clottey. This is about the toughest fight Floyd can make for March. Manny won’t fight him. Mosley is fighting in a couple of weeks. Williams has the same manager as Floyd. Fighting a bigger fighter with real KO power. Of course, Floyd is the man people love to hate, so they will come up with some rubberish. The only other good opponent would be Bradley but everyone would cry he’s too small.

But regardless of who “Pretty Boy” chooses to fight…he should insist that they subject themselves to the “Olympic” blood testing that he was trying to ram down Pacquiao’s throat. If we’re moving on from “The Fight” then what is the difference? Mayweather needs to find his opponent, Pacquiao has found his. Has Mayweather mentioned Clottey as an opponent? If not, then the only thing Clottey and Cintron have in common is that they both are getting a huge opportunity to fight two of the best fighters in the sport.

You two need to watch and follow boxing. Clottey has no power and a knockout % of like 50% and Cintron about 80% which is very high. Cintron has only two loses and both of those were to a fighter who was caught cheating. And he moved up to fight Martinez and left that fight with a draw.

Honestly, Last time, when I’ve heard Floyd will go against Juan Manuel Marquez, I did not watch the fight. I did not even bother to look for the result since I knew Floyd will win. But this, I guess it’s the same thing. Why should I bother for a non-exciting fight.
Cintron fought Martinez and most ppl felt that he won and the fight was a draw. Cintron then Mosley would be a great year for most fighters. Clottey is a good fighter but has no power. Cintron on the other hand has a lot of power.

If he fightin cintron at 154 why not fight williams or martinez which holds the WB0 belt at 154!! Cintron barely survive angulo wtf!!
While I would love to see this I’m not sure it will happen. I doubt Floyd would want the fight- and rightly so. He’d be taking a risk against a well schooled, former world champion and proven welterweight with real punching power. This is a big risk for Floyd to take considering Cintron is not a big attraction and probably wouldn’t contribute to any PPV buys and when Floyd wins the fight he’d simply be told he beat a washed-up has been whoses far past his best. Mayweather and Golden Boy still have yet to announce the next opponent anyway so nothing is for certain. However, this would make for a very interesting match up and any true fan would give Mayweather alot of credit for taking the fight.
I just said this! Cintron is bigger than Floyd and one of the hardest hitting welterweights. A much tougher opponent than Clottey. After this, its Mosley. As for Manny, lets see some more second tier fighters!
