Pacquiao vs. Mayweather: Will Manny get his ear’s boxed off?

By Dave Lahr: Manny Pacquiao won’t be facing a weight drained fighter if the bout with Floyd Mayweather Jr. is made nor will Pacquiao be fighting an opponent that had the living daylights beaten out of him in a recent fight like Miguel Cotto did in his bout with tough Mexican brawler Antonio Margarito last year. Pacquiao might as well retire now and go into politics or something because when he faces Mayweather, Manny will be taking a really tough opponent.
Pacquiao was hit really hard all night long with some monstrous shots from Cotto. Pacquiao didn’t duck anything that Cotto threw and was like a sitting duck for every shot that Cotto threw at him. Cotto had problems of his own, but that doesn’t cover up the fact that Pacquiao showed no head movement, basically little defense at all as he plodded into many shots that Cotto threw.
Late in the fight, Cotto looked like Muhammad Ali, punching Pacquiao on the move and making Pacquiao look slow slow at adapting to the movement. The way that Cotto boxed Pacquiao late in the fight, it very well could serve as a mini highlight of how Floyd Mayweather will box circles around Pacquiao in their fight. Didn’t Manny used to be able to defend himself? I remember seeing a couple of Pacquiao’s early fights in his career when he ducked shots and moved his head to avoid getting clobbered by fighters. Not anymore.
I just don’t see Pacquiao won’t beat Mayweather. I like Pacquiao and would like for him to do well against Mayweather, but I think he’s going to get the tar knocked out of him if he fights Mayweather.
Pacquiao looks like he’s gotten lazy on defense in recent fights and is now all about throwing power shots. Pacquiao just seems to be trying to run over people with his speed and power. It may be working right now, but Pacquiao is taking a lot of punishment, unlike before. If Pacquiao chooses to fight in that manner against Mayweather, he’s going to take a lot of punishment in the fight. I see Mayweather as the superior boxer of the two right now.
Mayweather is well schooled in every part of his game and taught by his father Floyd Mayweather Sr. and his father’s brother, both of which were excellent fighters in their prime. Pacquiao is a fighter who was born with a lot of physical tools, and has learned a lot since being trained by Freddie Roach. But from what I saw of his fight with Cotto, Pacquiao doesn’t stand a chance against Mayweather.

Second- Pacquiao is already in the Book of records and even Mayweather doesn’t fight him it will not take effect because he is history.

He could have weaved in and around Miguel to avoid his punches in the earlier rounds but he chooses not to to the chagrin of coach Roach. He was testing to see if he could take the bigger man’s bombs and he was right, he could. Miguel was running away from Manny from what I saw. Maybe you were watching a different fight because you sure was way off. Your article was lame and showed bias. You came off sounding like Mayweather’s spokesperson or publicist.
What is all this TKO nonsense? Mayweather could not even TKO Marquez despite being over the weight limit. He has never been known as a hard puncher, and most of his big fights end in decision.
Mayweather is a great boxer, and he may win against Pacquiao, but I don’t see a TKO on the horizon. I think he has a good chance of carrying the fight to a decision, in which case he will probably win. But knocking Pacquiao out? If Cotto could not do it, Mayweather certainly can not.

I dont think Floyd Jr. will fight Manny in this era. That is my honest opinion. As far as we(boxing fanatics) want it. We will never know what the outcome would be. Pacquiao can move on and fight Mosley-Berto winner and Floyd can go to England and fight Matthew Hatton or someone from lower weight division or Floyd Jr. can get back in line to fight Pacquiao as he has nothing to put on the table but his 40-0. Other title holders knows that negotiating with Floyd will be difficult when it comes to purse slice and terms. So a fight with Manny is a more attractive and a better business venture. And besides that Manny has the WBO belt on offer. So, it’s not just a normal match. In reality it will be a unification to prove to the world WHO is the undisputed welterweight champion.WBC,WBA and WBO…let’s go. I cant wait for this to happen.

Apparently he wasn’t watching the right fight, on Pacquiao vs Cotto. Cotto got a few good shots in yes, but did it affect Pacman? No. Cotto was losing already in the 4-6th rounds, and not recovering, was pretty much over from then.
And Mayweather beating Pacman and losing badly? LOL. Only way Mayweather will win is on decision in the 12th round after punching and running away like he usually does; But he is going against Pacquiao, faster and stronger. May Weather is smart.. but obviously jealous to Manny Pacquiao. Common, can’t you accept that some people are capable of doing great things without using drugs? It’s about discipline, hardworking and strong faith. I want to see Pacquiao fighting against May Weather, but I think it will not push through. May Weather is too proud of him self. After all he said about Manny, do you think he can still face the people if he’ll be knocked out by Manny? Pacquiao – takes fights with current, relevant fighters who can punch. Manny has proven he can take a punch and bounce back to win. He’s also fast, and strong – fighting off his back leg and punching at a variety of angles seldom seen in fights. Moving up in weight very quickly, so taking fights with heavier and heavier boxers.
Mayweather – fast, fast, fast – great defense and can roll a punch. Don’t know if he can take a punch, because he’s never still long enough to get hit. Not the hardest puncher, Pretty Boy is better known for quantity of hits, and for fighting boxers who smaller than he or are on the downward slope of their careers.
My prediction – PacMan is the first real fighter since Judah who has the speed to compete with Pretty Boy. And since a multitude of punches doesn’t stop PacMan from advancing, Pretty Boy may actually have to fight for the first time in his career. Can he pull it off? My money is on PacMan.
And PS – Pacquiao didn’t get so banged up in his fight with Cotto that he didn’t look fresh enough to go out and perform with his band in Vegas. Cotto’s face – now THAT was damage…

To win each fighter will have to execute his game plan to perfection. You never know what can happen in boxing. If you want to talk statistics Shane Mosleys KO percentile is 75, Pacquiao 69.09, Floyd 62.5. Both Shane and Pacquiao have had more fights and more rounds boxed. There are lies damn lies and statistics. Example Cotto beat Mosley, Margarito destroyed Cotto, Mosley destroyed Margarito.
If Pacquiao got hit by Cotto rest assured he will be hit twice as hard against Floyd an it stands to reason then when Mosley defeats Andre Berto he will have a shot at the winner.

I do beleived that as a fighter have different style or strategy to fight when he face every opponent. Just it seems you just looking the outcome present fight of Pacquiao over Cotto. Please examine carefully the every fight of Pacquiao. If you considered Mayweather will win over Pacquiao it’s fine. As for my opinion, I think Manny has the footwork to at least make this an amazing fight. If you look at Mayweather’s highlights, he’s never fought anyone with the footwork and agility as Pacquiao does. Check out the De La Hoya and Judah fight. They are the best examples of Mayweather being hurt by sustained pressure and the ability to move around his punches. Unfortunately, they were not able to this the entire fight and lost. Everyone else he fought were slow, stand up fighers. On the other hand, Manny was able to put pressure on Cotto until the 12th round.

A very interesting article. Very one sided, no facts, and almost no truth in many statements. You were probably watching a different fight or just dreaming about it. Yes Pacquiao did take a lot of hit but it was in his game plan. He wanted to test Cotto’s power and he needed to prove that he can take the punch from a steady welterweight. As far as Cotto looking like Ali, you are dead wrong. Over and over again, in the later rounds Cotto was described as in full tactical retreat. Bert Sugar along with many described the first four rounds to be like that of Hagler Hearns and all Pacquiao after that. Cotto was tough to hang in there and not get knocked out but was no match for Pacquiao after those two early knock downs. How can you say Pacquiao is getting lazy. He made De La Hoya look old, his speed was too much for Hatton, and he dictated the speed for the Cotto fight. The Cotto fight was getting so easy that he looked like he didn’t want to hit Cotto anymore. Pacquiao at times looked at the ref wondering when are you going to stop this. Manny isn’t going to fight the same fight. Freddie Roach even said that they would need a different game plan due to Floyd being a defensive fighter. In my opinion, Mayweather would only win by split decision. He’s going to punch and run like he always does. I think Cotto is a stronger puncher than Floyd and if Manny can go through all of Cotto’s best shots, then Floyd can’t hurt Pacquiao. Mayweather can’t counter the storm of punches Manny throws. Floyd will get him a couple times but not damaging. After a couple flush hits from Pacquiao, Mayweather will go down. I would say Pacquiao wins by 10th or 11th ko or unanimous decision. Floyd would only win by split decision. It depends on the judges if they favor the busier man or not.

If boxing is ALL about running away from the opponent and not throwing punches then Moneyman may stand a chance to win over Pacman; but surely the former will throw punches. And, when he does, before he withdraws his hand to cover his face or body Pacman will answer with thunderbolt lightning punches. Momeyman may evade 50% of Pacman’s punches but imagine if Pacman lunches 100 missiles per round to the face and body of the Moneyman in 180-degree angle. I am tempted to think Moneyman will ONLY surely win if he has 2 more additional eyes in both sides of his head. He better practice to increase the range of his sight for this fight rather than the immodesties of his talks. Moneyman is one of boxing’s great punch evaders, YES, I SALUTE to that. I wonder though which is faster: Moneyman’s escaping or Pacman’s punching? Surely Pacman will be trained hard to answer Moneyman’s ‘punch and back off’ tactics. They are both fast and strong but I think Pacman is faster and stronger than Moneyman in welterweight division.

In any case. You cant really predict who will win in this fight but we know this. Pacquiao can take a beating. If you watched Pacquiao fight, youve never seen Pacquiao stop and get hit. If youre ignorant enough to say oh he ran out of air. Do you see those muscles under his arms? Do you know what they are there for? You might have seen them from Bruce Lee. Im not saying that Pacquiao is any sort like him, but that means is that he is in top shape and controls every facet of his body. Pacquiao is one of the smartest fighter out there, he can change his fight strategy in the middle of the fight, not a lot of fighters can do that. With regards to the Cotto fight, he didn’t move his head because he didn’t have to. His strategy during this fight was to take Cotto’s best punches and keep coming back with harder punches. He took Cotto’s heart during the fight to the point where Cotto was just surviving and not even fighting anymore. That my friend is a genius strategy.
With regards to Mayweather, Pacquiao and Roach will employ a different strategy. I would guest that Pacman will work more on his speed to out-speed Mayweather. Three reasons why Pacman will win over Mayweather, his training is getting better, his camp is getting better and he is staying active fighting the best fighters out there. Unfortunately, I can’t say the same for Mayweather.

I am not sure that Floyd will knock out Manny, but i agree that Manny does not have a chance. Floyd will bring on technical battle, and Manny’s boxing skills look like a caveman’s compared to Floyd’s. Style wise he is perfect for Floyd too, dynamic puncher with no good defense. Floyd can easily outscore him. Manny is only impressive against brawler with no defense skills. I do not think there will be a knock out in this fight, but I can’t see how Manny can win even one round against Floyd. His only strategy would be just keep throwing as many punches as possible in hope some of his punches land or try to bully Floyd, but that’s not likely as Floyd is physically a bigger fighter. So yeah… But hey, I would still love to see this fight happening, Floyd going 100% is pure art.

What fight did you watch. Cotto is top 5 pound per pound. He did hit Pacquaio a few times, of course cotto would get some in. What impressed me is that it didnt show that pacquaio was hurt at all. He let Cotto punch him in his stomach to feel his power but it did not hurt him. Cotto did not look like ALi in the later rounds. after the 4th round Cotto didnt have a chance. The belief that Mayweather poses the biggest threat to Manny Pacquiao is old news. I’m a Pacman Fan and I suffer from being blinded by my Hate no dislike of Mayweather’s actions and Comments outside the ring. It’s really a shame too because he’s a master boxer who fought some good competition early on but as of late is what a lot of people call a cherry picker.
It’s not because he’s afraid of anyone he just wants the most money per fight he can get. He’s not the least bit interested in creating a legacy he thinks he already has one but he doesn’t. If he ever fights Manny and beats him that still won’t cement it he would have to fight a few fighters his own size like Mosley and Williams before he get credit from me. Manny admitted of letting Cotto clobber him in the first round just to test whether he could take the guy’s punches. After doing so, he discovered that Cotto’s punches weren’t powerful enough so he thought that he didn’t have to evade them. I’m not a fan of his tactic but don’t say that he couldn’t defend himself that night. He meant to do that. I’m sure he’ll take Floyd more seriously.

1. Comparing like opponent results in boxing is silly because the dynamics of each boxing match is different based on the participants.
2. Pac is a great fighter and I aniticipate a great fight with Mayweather. My guess is that Pac would win the early rounds as Floyd will have trouble figuring out Manny and gaging his speed and power. Middle rounds and on, I would expect Floyd to begin to take over the fight. Regardless of his antics, he is the most skillfull “boxer” of this time.
3. What separates these two great fighters and the reason I would pick Mayweather to win is defense. Floyd is simply hard to hit/hurt with his chin tucking technique…Manny is not.

What did we saw at the coto vs pac fight? pac beat cotto real bad, but there is a reason why he beat cotto, right? so what was that reason? That reason is simple, Pac found out that cotto punches didnt have any power to hurt him and thats when he took over and beat cotto the way he did, But how he found out that cotto didnt have power to hurt him? Well because since the bell sound he was giving pac a boxing lesson, he land his jab easy on pac, he make pac miss every shot, he also land some combinations. I disagree with your bottom-line prediction and crude writing style, but I do agree that Pacquiao started playing a sloppy fight in the second half of the Cotto bout, after he had established to himself that he was physically stronger.
Yes, Mayweather will be feeding Pacquiao many more shots than Cotto managed to (and yes, Cotto threw some bombs even late in the game, however Manny did walk right through them and completed his deadly combination).
Expect Manny to fight more like he did against DLH against Mayweather, at least for the few several rounds. Both Mayweather and Pacquiao are going to get hit more in this fight than they have in the last few (probably more than Mayweather has ever been hit). The question is who can take more punishment. There are some parts of your article i’m agree with and other i don’t. First it is true that Pacquiao took punishment from Cotto in the fight. We all saw that. Cotto took double punishment from Pacquiao but Pacquiao also had been stuned. I was speakless about how he took those power punches from Cotto. But i’m sure that Cotto hit much harder than Mayweather.That is a fact. And i tell you now, if Cotto couldn’t knock him out what Mayweather can do?! Maybe he can outbox Pacquiao a couple of rounds, i don’t know, but he can not beat him. I think Mayweather ducked Cotto in the past when Cotto was undefited.

Manny is taking PED’s he’s getting stronger and after 50 fights does not seem to have any reaction to any WW shots he’s taking something thats obvious, plus which fighter gets stronger as the fight goes on he looke like he should fight for the 50 rounds its not natural. before i start i aint a big mayweather fan, he has dodged MANY fighters but for people saying things like “Manny KO’d hatton earlier than mayweather did” means bugger and all, power isn’t what mayweather uses, he doesn’t aim to KO people. Also, Manny and Fred analyse and study their opponent before they get into the fight, so they know what to practice on, which is why his techniques are incredibly unpredictable to each opponent. The only reason why Manny lost in a few fights is either because he wasn’t that great YET, and the only reason why he lost to Morales ONCE was because he donated blood. But everyone can see how Manny is becoming better and better. It is obvious that I AM a fan of Manny, but i’m not saying that he’s going to win against Mayweather. In my own opinion, Mayweather is scared to lose his title. if he wasn’t he’d call out Manny for a fight instead of talking trash about Manny.

Dave Lahr, your full of it.! Mayweather has no power. He doesnt even have the heart to go for the knock out. Watch the Marquez fight? Yes Cotto did hit Pacquiao with sum really good shots but he walked right through them. Mayweather will run, and Pacman will walk him down and Knock him out.!
I think that Mayweather will outbox Pacquiao, but I don’t agree that he fights like a “cave man” or has stopped trying to defend himself. When he was against the ropes in the Cotto fight, none of Miguel’s shots were penetrating. His body was his real weak spot and he has corrected that by going up in weight.
The difference will be that the speed disparity that was present in his last three fights simply won’t exist against Mayweather. That means that Pac-Man’s shots won’t land with the same consistency (or accuracy) because Floyd won’t give him the same window of time to get his punches off.

It’s strange that Pacquiao has never been a favorite of the press (or HBO until recently). Watch past fights of either man, and my comments will be qualified easily. You forgot to mention that in the last two years mannys been taken on top fighters, who has Floyd fought? Manny’s opponents or bigger and competative while Floyd is fighting fat hobbits with no power.

Cotto was not weight drained, he was very specific in the negotiations that 145 was a natural fit for him and thats as low as he would go. FYI….Pacquiao looked good against Cotto, and if you think he looked bad, how did the last 35 people look going against him?
